The fence for Rose symbolizes the protection and nurturing feelings she offers. It’s a positive figurative symbol, showing what type of person she is―someone who cares for others. One morning, Rose was hanging clothes and singing, “Jesus, be a fence all around me every day. Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel on my way” (2074). Seemingly, the choice of song that she selects demonstrates the protection that she’s willing to offer for her family. Rose asks Troy to build her a fence, and Troy does not understand why. One afternoon when Cory and Troy are building the fence, Cory asks why her mother wishes for a fence and Troy responds, “Damn if I know either. What the hell she keeping out with it? Troy and Lyons get in a heated argument and Rose attempts to end the argument by telling Troy, “Let the boy have ten dollars, Troy” which indeed helps (2073). Even though Rose is not Lyons’ mother, she cares for him enough to interfere in the dispute and not just stand there and observe their verbal fight. Also, when Troy gets mad at Cory, Rose tries to calm Troy. For example, when Troy scolds Cory for quitting his job at the A&P store and tells him to get it back, Rose asks Troy, “Why don’t you let the boy go ahead and play football?” (2083). She cares for Cory and wishes him to pursue a career in life that he greatly enjoys. Finally, when the police arrest Gabriel, Rose tells Cory, “I’ll talk to [Troy] when he gets back. He had to go see about you Uncle Gabe” (2093). Rose is concerned about Gabriel. Not only does she offer her nurturing feelings to relatives but to others as well. While holding Alberta’s baby girl in his arms, Troy asks Rose to accept him and his child, knowing Alberta dies. Rose, the motherly figure and compassionate woman tells Troy, “Okay, Troy you’re right. I’ll take care of your baby for you cause like you say she’s innocent and you can’t visit the sins of the father upon the child”

The poems “Sea Rose” by H.D and “Vague Poem” by Elizabeth Bishop were both written by two women who took over the Victorian era. H.D’s works of writing were best known as experimental reflecting the themes of feminism and modernism from 1911-1961. While Bishop’s works possessed themes of longing to belong and grief. Both poems use imagery, which helps to make the poem more concrete for the reader. Using imagery helps to paint a picture with specific images, so we can understand it better and analyze it more. The poem “The Rose that Grew from Concrete” is about a rose that grew in concrete a metaphor that shows that you have to get past your problems to succeed. And the poem “Mother to Son” is about a mother explaining how hard life is a metaphor. Troy was secretly having an extramarital affair with a woman named Alberta. Troy’s friends all knew the truth, but Troy continually denied any involvement with Alberta. Troy’s best friend, Bono, however, managed to convince Troy what he was wrong for continuing the affair. Troy then came clean to Rose, telling her he was going to be the father of a child Alberta was pregnant with. Rose became heartbroken. She told Troy, “I been standing with you! I been right here with you, Troy. I got a life too. I gave eighteen years of my life to stand in the same spot as you. Don’t you think I ever wanted other things? Don’t you think I had dreams and hopes?” (1606). Rose had given up her entire life to be with Troy. However, Troy never once apologized. Troy continually defended himself, and he went as far as to justify himself. Troy claimed Alberta was an escape for Troy. Troy stated, “It’s just… She gives me a different idea… a different understanding about myself. I can step out of this house and get away from the pressures and problems” (1605). Rose was hurt, however, and Troy never apologized nor stopped seeing Alberta. He continued to live in an illusion that he could keep both his family and his secret life separate. However, Alberta later died in childbirth. Her daughter, Raynell, was to be raised by Troy and Rose. Troy effectively destroyed his marriage because of his excessive pride. The diction used in this scene shows the strength in Rose’s voice. “I’ll take care of your baby for you… cause… like you say… she’s innocent… and you can’t visit the sins of the father upon the child. A motherless child has got a hard time. From right now... this child got a mother. But you a womanless man.” This scene is very emotional and climatic. The bluntness of Rose’s words and the lack of sympathy she has for Troy shows the reader how little love Rose has left for him. This is the reason why Troy fights against his family and himself, because he feels like he is the only one who can protect them. To Cory and Rose, Troy is destroying the family because of his stubborn thoughts but to Troy he is saving the family from falling apart and this distrust causes the family to eventually fall apart. Troy really does try his hardest to be a good father and is bothered by the fact that Rose and Cory do not see it as him trying to protect them but more of him destroying the family. In the play Fences, August Wilson uses symbolism throughout the story to emphasis the physical and emotional barrier between the protagonist, Troy Maxon, and everyone around him. Troy loses his career as a professional baseball player because of his race. This causes him to be a bitter man and he eventually loses his friends and family because of it. Wilson uses both literal and figurative symbolism to express the themes in this play.
First off, she was submissive to Troy because she felt he gave her opportunities to live a better life. He gave her the chance to have a husband and a son: the family she always wanted. Rose feels a sense of responsibility towards Troy because of this. What Troy does not do, however, is give her the chance to her raise her child. Cory was mostly raised and influenced by his father. It is clear that Troy controlled Cory’s life, responsibilities, and punishments, while Rose’s thoughts and ideas were overshadowed by Troy’s wishes. For example, while Rose pushed for Troy to let his son play football, Troy had the final say. As hard as Rose pushed for Troy to allow their son to do what made him happiest, Tory is relentless and refuses to listen to Rose at all. She is silenced by his dominance. As the marriage progressed, Rose tries harder and harder to make their relationship work; she even had Troy build a fence around their yard as a metaphorical attempt to keep their family together. This is Rose’s final attempt of having a perfect family and love. She is afraid of losing what matters most to her, her family, and this is her way of keeping them close. This dynamic lasted for eighteen years, until Troy cheated on Rose and got another woman pregnant. His true character shows through in this scene, because instead of trying to apologize for what he did, he tries to justify his actions. He is even close to getting physically violent with her. Rose will not accept his excuse. For the first time in eighteen years Rose stands up for herself and does not back down until her voice is heard. Rose finally realizes that Troy only has power over her because she lets him. From this moment, she refuses to be a part of his life anymore. She does, however, agree to raise his child, Raynell, after her mother dies in childbirth. Troy, on the other hand, will no longer be a part of her
Rose was disheartened hearing the news of Troy’s affair with Alberta, and have not talked to Troy for six months. During these six months, Troy has been coming home late and made no further efforts to mend their relationship. Rose becomes very frustrated living like this, so on an early afternoon, she tries to talk to Troy and convince him to come home directly from work. Troy’s response is not something you would expect from someone who did wrong in their relationship. He said, “‘All of a sudden, after all this time, you want to talk to me, huh? You ain’t wanted to talk to me for months. You ain’t wanted to talk to me last night. You ain’t wanted no part of me then. What you wanna talk to me about now? ”’ (Wilson 73). This quote tells us that Troy said Rose did not want to talk to him months and days ago, so why does she wants to talk to him now. He responded very rude and brazenly probably because his pride was hurt when Rose didn’t want to talk to him and he was not able to control his “woman”. Another reason could be that he doesn’t know how to make himself subordinate or apologize for cheating in way to show regret or his fault. Throughout the play the reader sees how 'fences' are used to protect the characters mentioned. Early on, Rose protects herself by singing, 'Jesus, be a fence all around me every day. Jesus, I want you to protect me as I travel on my way' (Wilson 21). By Rose signing this song, one can see Rose's desire for protection. To Rose, a fence is a symbol of her love. Her longing for a fence signifies that Rose represents love and nurturing within a safe environment. However Troy and Cory think the fence is a burden and reluctantly work on finishing Rose's project. Bono indicates to Troy that Rose wants the fence built to protect her loved ones as he says, 'Some people build fences to keep people out' and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you? (61). While reminiscing about the 'project', Bono asks Troy why he 'got to go and get some hard wood' (60) as he says, "Nigger, why you got to go and get some hard wood? You ain't doing nothing but building a little old fence. Get you some soft pine wood. That's all you need" (60). Troy choosing to use hard wood instead of soft pine wood shows the reader that Troy wants hard wood to protect him harder from Death and all of his problems. Although each character in the play interprets the concept of a fence differently, they all see it as some form of protection.
'A Red, Red Rose', was first published in 1794 in A Selection of Scots Songs, edited by Peter Urbani. Written in ballad stanzas, the verse - read today as a poem – pieces together conventional ideas and images of love in a way that transcends the "low" or non-literary sources from which the poem is drawn. In it, the speaker compares his love first with a blooming rose in spring and then with a melody "sweetly play'd in tune." If these similes seem the typical fodder for love-song lyricists, the second and third stanzas introduce the subtler and more complex implications of time. In trying to quantify his feelings - and in searching for the perfect metaphor to describe the "eternal" nature of his love - the speaker inevitably comes up against love's greatest limitation, "the sands o' life." This treatment of time and beauty predicts the work of the later Romantic poets, who took Burns's work as an important influence.
