Disability Representation in 'The Fault in Our Stars'

Many different movies have characters with different types of disabilities, in my essay I would like to focus on one particular movies. The movie I chose is “The Fault in Our Stars” from 2014, directed by Josh Boone. “The Fault in Our Stars” based on a novel by John Green, tells a story about a 17 year old Hazel Lancaster who suffers from thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs, but thanks to an experimental treatment the growth of her tumors have been stopped. Due to her problems with breathing, she has to have a permanent access to oxygen and carries an oxygen tank with her. This scene perfectly shows us how many people seem so overwhelmed by their relatives sickness, they forget who is really suffering and decide to leave so they will not have to deal with that. Quite often friends and relatives of people chronically ill or disabled do not realize how big of an influence they have on the lives of their kindred. Sometimes it seems like it is the families who struggle more than the actual handicapped person. “Imperial Affliction” by Peter van Houten- Hazel's favorite book and a lecture which really influences the plot of the movie is a story of a young girl – Ana, who's suffering from leukemia, the sbook covers her life, a battle with the disease, and just when the reader sympathizes with her, the story suddenly stops without any explanation or proper ending. The story ends just like a life of a young cancer patient, and probably how will end the life of Hazel – all of a sudden and without the answer for many questions. In my opinion the fact that the book covers the story of a girl in a similar situation as Lancaster's, and ends how she imagines how her life will end is why she enjoys it so much. Peter van Houten replies after few days informing him that although he can not answer his request and tell what have happened to the characters from the book via internet, he invites both Augustus and Hazel to come and visit him in Amsterdam. While Hazel and Gus begin to plan their trip to Europe, their excitement gets cooled down by her parents who inform them that their finances are do not allow them to cover for the trip.
