In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” exhibits an accurate representation of the Gothic genre. Edgar Allan Poe’s work presents itself as mystifying because of the way he is able to confuse and muddy up the concepts to his readers. Poe incorporates the disappearance and reappearance action of the characters throughout the short story as well as an eerie feeling to represent the Gothic genre. Poe also uses the literary device, Gothic double. However, critics of Poe’s work have considered that some of his short stories are a parody of the Gothic genre. Edgar Allan Poe applies a variety of examples of this feel in the short story. An example of the feel of the genre is “the haunted mansion, haunted siblings, bewildering corridors, and eerie chambers,”(Fisher 88). The so-called feel of the Gothic genre is so well represented in “The Fall of the House of Usher,” that it makes a great argument that it positively is a representation of the Gothic genre and not for the Gothic parody. An obvious clue that Poe left behind was the death. In which, most Gothic genre ends with a death or some kind of terrible ending ,yet in “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the conclusion of the short story is a basic ending to the story because this type of genre is dark. In this case, it is possible for “The Fall of the House of Usher,” to be able to be a parody. Edgar Allan Poe loved to manipulate anyone he could. Poe challenged his readers by “boasting that he could not be beat,”(Schoell 68) in his cryptograms. Outside and inside the mansion, the atmosphere is described as “gloomy, with mysterious noises, and chilly drafts”(Schoell 69). An ironic part of the story is that one night it just happens to have a thunderstorm and of course the night of the thunderstorm noises begin to occur. The noises occur when Roderick and the narrator start reading a scary book because they cannot sleep through the storm. The noises under the house corresponded with the noises included in the story. Those attributes that are described are a bit cliche because they are easy to identify. Which makes the reader of the short story do a u-turn and read the text over and over again to try to grasp the concept that Poe to teach. Therefore, to be able to tell if the short story is a parody of the Gothic genre or not can only be answered by Edgar Allen Poe
