Heroes. We often encounter them in literature and movies. Some of literature's most famous heroes have been brought to life and put on the big screen in order to bring entertainment to the general public, and these films often have great success. Some characters and their franchises, like Harry Potter, experience such great success that amusement parks are built in their name in order to help fans realize their dreams of living in the characters world. Heroes experience great success in today’s society, but what exactly is a hero? A hero is a protagonist, almost always a warrior, who must fight a battle of some sort in order to improve the life of themselves and others, and often wins this battle with the help of a divine figure.

The Ramayana follows the hero Rama, who saves his wife, and many other people, from Ravana. In The Odyssey follows Odysseus treacherous and obstacle filled journey home. The Epic of Gilgamesh follows the adventures of Gilgamesh, and his friend Enkidu, and David and Goliath follows David’s battle with Goliath. From my experience, many stories are named after the hero that is their protagonist.
Contrary to what Dwayne Johnson may have had us believing from his role as Hercules in the 2014 movie Hercules (another story named after the protagonist), not all heroes are buff. In fact, one of the most well known heroes, David, of David and Goliath, is “only a boy”, but he is still a hero (David and Goliath, paragraph 19). Another thing that may be a misconception caused by movies is that vigilantes are heroes. For example, Spider-Man originally starts using his powers in order to find the man who killed his uncle. While this eventually turns into just stopping people who do wrong, when he starts out Spider-Man has extremely selfish purposes and would not have be classified as a hero. Vigilantes often function for selfish reasons, and a hero usually operates for the benefit of
