The artwork, The Emerald Empire, was created by Zara Mahmood. This artwork is a surrealist piece of art because it includes an irrational juxtaposition of images. The artwork was created between November 2015 to December 2015. Several events occurred during this time period, like the ISIS attack on Paris, thee shooting in California, election debates and Thanksgiving. There many literal objects in my art like mountains/volcanoes, a body of water and an imaginary creature. When I first look at the artwork I notice the creature because it has dark color value, I also notice the castle because it has vivid colors that make it look realistic. Many types of colors are used in the art, some of them are warm analogous colors and others are cool analogous colors but the creature has shaded pencil colors which makes it stand out. Shapes are also incorporated in the art like triangles, curvy lines and circles, these shapes have smooth/bumpy edges. Many colors were used and they were contrasted because they were either warm or cool analogous colors. The value is contrasted because the overall landscape has vivid colors but the value is dark. The effect that the color brings is fear/ evil because it has very dark colors. Shapes are also implied throughout the artwork in many ways, the landscape uses many frottage's to incorporate shape. The curvy line are very important because they add the effect of the body of water. Texture is also an important element because it brings the creature "alive" and makes the landscape look real. The artist uses actual textures to make the creature stand out. Light is also used to show the time of day and the light value.
