The Effects Of Overfishing

Human activity creates many problems to the environment. Depending on the activity, humans harm the environment in different ways, such as pollution, deforestation and wasting water or electricity. Overfishing is another example of a human activity that people don´t give much importance to and it´s actually one of the most dangerous and harmful things to the environment and to ourselves. Overfishing is the activity of collecting great quantities of fish to levels that the ecosystem is unable to sustain itself, so it doesn´t have the possibility to recover properly. Species don´t have enough time to reproduce by themselves. Overfishing is becoming a global disaster that should be taken care of in order to maintain marine life stable. Some fishermen still go fishing to areas that are restricted, and they catch the bigger fish like whales and sharks, to sell their fins or other parts of the body. It took us only 55 years to wipe out 90% of the ocean’s predators causing a disruption of the marine ecosystem . On the other hand, not all the fishers are bad, some respect the law and fish where they are told to and to the amount of fish that they are allowed. However, some people think that catching the bigger fish, instead of the small, is better because that way the small fish have time to recover. That´s a theory, but the problem is that when one starts removing the big species from the sea; that’s when there are less predators than prey, and the ecosystem needs to have more predators to help to keep the balance. The big fish, the bill fish, the groupers, the big things will be gone. It is happening now. If things go unchecked, we'll have a sea full of little horrible things that nobody wants to eat. We might end up with a marine junkyard dominated by plankton . Otherwise, the ecosystem would be a chaos. For example, turtles eat jellyfish, but if the turtles become extinct, then the jellyfish population will rise and there would be a change in the ecosystem. This is why nature needs more predators, to maintain everything under
