Cheating is a big issue that has reached the most competitive campuses around the United States. It is increasing more and more with the new technology that we have in the 21st century because students have easy access to many sources of information. Cheating is something all students have done at some point in their lives, but as they reach a higher academic level, they are faced with more rigorous consequences that can affect their futures in many different ways. Cheating might be seen as an easy way to obtain a good grade, get into a good college, or maintain scholarships or financial aid, but the consequences could affect the life and the future of a student.

Cheating is not just seen in academics, but also in many different places such as sports, insurance policies, tax forms, and job applications. There are even cases when students pay other students to take the exams for them, so that they can get into a competitive university. These exams include the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) and the ACT (American College Test), which are standardized exams that are required by almost all of the universities, and each university has a policy of how high the score needs to be. Some universities have higher score requirements than others, and for some they’re optional. When students use other students to cheat, they can get in legal issues and can be accused of “criminal impersonation and fraud.” According to the CBS News, Sam Eshaghoff, a nineteen-year-old college student, decided to make a profit out of his knowledge, as he was good at “getting high scores on the SAT college admission exam,” so he began his “lucrative business.” Students would pay him an average of “2,500 dollars to fake their test using fake ID’s.” As a result, he was arrested and was given community service as a …show more content…

Many students are using technology to cheat because they are able to find answers quickly online by just searching for them. Cheating is increasing in the United States at higher rates because many of the students in high school or in college have to deal with different responsibilities, pressure, and loads of different types of work. Richard Perez Peña states in “Studies Find More Students Cheating,” “Internet access has made cheating easier, enabling students to connect instantly with answers, friends to consult and works to plagiarize.” Plagiarism, which means using a work of someone else as if it were yours, is the most common form of cheating in high school and in college. Plagiarism occurs by not citing a source correctly or by not putting the proper quotation marks on a quote that you borrow to state your point. Some students don’t even know what plagiarism is, and they do it using the technology that we have today. Many professors have argued that the technology is developing every day and that they can’t keep up with it, and so students are using that technology to cheat. Therefore, professors are trying to use different websites, such as Turnitin, where the students submit their work and the computer searches for different online files to check for plagiarism.
