The story of the duel between Hamilton and Burr is one of the most famous stories within American textbook, yet very little explanation has been made as to the cause or the effect of the event. What leads up to this very duel is the result of Hamilton public attack on Burr; however, unlike other which was political, this one is personal. It is very important to understand the role of Hamilton “flamboyant [political] style” and Burr’s “lack of political principle”, something Hamilton would see as a very flaw of his character. A travesty occurred on this July 11, 1804. In response to Vice-President Burr’s challenge a duel took place on the grounds of Weekhawken, New Jersey, on the very spot where Mr. Hamilton’s eldest son Phillip had died. This day of reckoning has been long approaching. Each man has opposed the other during their political careers. It is supposed the duel was provoked by Burr after personal exploitation sparked by Hamilton, this along with the public humiliation of a lost election. Some dire insults can only be dispelled with an extreme display of bravery. Had Burr not defended his honor others may have considered him as a man, not possessing sufficient firmness to defend his own character, and consequently unworthy of their support. Vice-President Burr’s reasoning most certainly was centered on protecting both his political career and his goodness.
This is where Hamilton dies, but actually both of the participants were casualties because Hamilton died, but was honored by the people and the government. However, Burr lost everything such as his reputation, and his position. Major mistakes that come from Burr and Hamilton was when Burr betrayed Jefferson when he was running his second term by switching political parties Jefferson's enemy Federalists which made Hamilton to say that he's despicable. Burr is too ambitious and desperate when it comes to politics like Jefferson. Hamilton in other hand was an arrogant. He insults Burr periodically, which made Burr to lose his position and reputation by publicly. In conclusion, by starting with a violent clash between Hamilton and Burr, establishes that the stakes for which these men had learned to debate one another. The end of this chapter did end in violent death, but the reader now understands that the author views these relationships as fiery and passionate although they were flawed by destroying their friendship, lives, and careers by insulting, killing, debating, and betraying one another, but they all failed to achieve their full aspirations due to their flawed

In order for someone to understand what lesson Joseph Ellis was trying to teach, one must first come to an understanding of these five short stories. The first story to review and understand is called the duel. The duel is one of the most historical conflicts in history. The duel actually came to be from years of personal and political resentment, between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. These two men really hit high tensions during the New York gubernatorial race. Due to Burr Being a candidate for this race, and due to the duel taking place during the time dueling was becoming outlawed, the duel had a vast political ramification. With the duel going badly and Alexander Hamilton Dying, Burr under New York and New Jersey stature was charged, but all charges were later dismissed, bringing Burrs career to an end. One can conclude that the significance regarding the duel is how violence during the beginning of American statehood, was highly politically based. What really makes the duel uniquely important is the fact or trend after a revolution for revolutionaries to turn on one another in an unavoidable bloodbath. Ellis seems to side more with Hamilton and make him look like a saint.

The title “Confederates in the Attic”: Dispatches from the Unfinished Civil War carries two meanings in Tony Horwitz’s thoughtful and entertaining exploration of the role of the American Civil War in the modern world of the South. The first meaning alludes to Horwitz’s personal interest in the war. As the grandson of a Russian Jew, Horwitz was raised in the North but early in his childhood developed a fascination with the South’s myth and history. He tells readers that as a child he wrote about the war and even constructed a mural of significant battles in the attic of his own home. The second meaning refers to regional memory, the importance or lack thereof yet attached to this momentous national event.
