The first time the beautiful lady spoke was on February 18. She told Bernadette, “I do not promise you happiness in this world but in the other.” She then made a request to Bernadette, “Would you be kind enough to come here for a fortnight?” Bernadette accepted to visit the apparition site for a fortnight. Truly, Bernadette went through a lot of suffering particularly in the hands of the government authorities who sometimes sent the local police to either arrest Bernadette or disperse the people who by now have started going to the apparition site for prayers. On February 24, the lady asked Bernadette to do penance. She said “penance, penance, penance” she also told her to pray for sinners. The name did not mean anything to Bernadette as she did not understand what it meant. She went to the priest repeating the name as she walked along and told the priest the name of the beautiful lady. When the priest heard the name “Immaculate Conception”, he was all the more skeptical. Four years earlier – 1854, the pontiff, Pope Pius IX had declared the dogma of the Immaculate Conception.
