“An eye for an eye will make the whole world go blind” (Mohanda Ghandi). The death penalty should be abolished in the U.S. It is inhumane and harsh. The idea of putting another human to death is hard to imagine. A decent society does not punish in such a gruesome way. If you act in the same manner as a killer, then what is the difference? You want to show that killing is wrong by killing? It is a contradiction that society must kill in order to teach against killing. States that have death penalty laws do not have lower crime rates or murder rates than states without such laws. The death penalty only takes place for first degree murder, aircraft hijacking and treason. People who commit the last two crimes know exactly what they are doing at the time, and the death penalty will not stop them. The murderers can be stopped. The death penalty will not stop them. Studies show that most of the people on death row committed their crime in the heat of passion or under the influence of drugs or alcohol while some even had mental illnesses. For each of these circumstances, the person would be unable to think about the consequences of his actions in the time of the crime. "The psychological mind-set of the criminal is such that they are not able to consider consequences at the time of the crime. Most crimes are crimes of passion that are done in situations involving intense excitement or concern. I just do not see how it could do that. The families go through severe trauma, loss, and sometimes mental illnesses like depression. The executions, however, do not help the families heal or end their pain. The families of murder victims could benefit from the money being used for executions by using it for counseling or other help they may need.
If someone killed a loved one of mine, I would want them to suffer. I would not want someone to just put them out of their misery. That may seem wrong, but what the suspect did was also wrong. I also believe that everyone deserves a chance to start again. Racism, neglect, violence, and mental illness are all issues impacting who becomes a “criminal.” Some of these people may be criminals because they were never given a first chance.
