Recommended: Hispanic and American culture

As I walked into my local small ethnic grocery store in my hometown for the first time I could not help but to be amazed. It was so neat to see the cultural art hanging around the walls and all the variety of different foods. El Cristal: Tienda Hispana is a great place to shop. When shopping in the grocery store there were many Hispanics that would come in and out of the door. Since the store has a dominantly Hispanic demeanor there was only one other Caucasian in the store besides myself. Most people of other cultures visit an ethnic grocery store when looking for something specific in a recipe where as someone of the same ethnicity buys a good amount of their groceries from there. While shopping and gazing at all the foods, some of the labels were harder to read than others. Foods such as seasonings would be strictly in the Spanish language therefore I didn’t know anything about the product. They made shopping into a leisure pastime. This environment meant shopping was a means of freedom to look around, pick up objects with no obligations to buy. As one historian remarked, department stores: “encouraged a perception of the building as a public place, where consumption itself was almost incidental to the delights of a sheltered promenade in a densely crowded, middle-class urban space” (Whitaker, 2006).
