In The Crucible by Arthur Miller there were many conflicts within the characters. What were the reasons for John Proctor to destroy his confession at the end of The Crucible? He confessed in order to save his own life. His wife was pregnant and thought it best to lie in order to be around his family. After his confession he is urged to sign. he begins to have reservations and he responds “Because it is my name! Because i cannot have another in my life! Because i live and sign myself to lies!”

He was afraid that his sons would never respect him and think him a coward for lying in the court. He also doesn't want to die for no good reason. Many innocent people died because they were accused and had to admit on the charge either way they were going to get hanged. Proctor seemed to regret having an affair with Abigail Williams.

He didn't deny it at all he was an honest man. He decided to sign his confession because he didn't want to sell his friends out lying about them as well as himself. He made the right decision on confessing and not lying about what he had done so he wouldn't die feeling guilty and ruining his name. His sons would have pretty much payed the price for their father's affair with abigail williams. He saved his wife's life even though she also felt guilty.

His best possession was just his name therefore that's why they wanted to hang his confession on the church door so the town would see what type of guy he was. Proctor would never forgive himself but he did regain his good name and self respect. Elizabeth had lost all respect for proctor but regained her respect for him when he had decided to confess and die without any lies at the court. That's when she pretty much realized that he was really sorry about his affair. Although all these hangings happened no one deserved to die like these other innocent people. they should have had a better way of punishing people. Like we do know people get
