What makes this story more unique is that we see the entire plot play out through the perspective of a character named Red. In the novella, Red describes the story of his fellow inmate named Andy. Andy was a former banker serving a double life sentence for the murders of his cheating wife and her lover, which we later find he was wrongly accused. Throughout the novella, Red describes his and Andy’s experience within the system. In the story, Red explains “when you 're in stir, you belong to the state and if you forget it, woe is you” (King 28). This is important because Red expresses the torture they face while in prison. In the story, Andy describes prison officials as monsters, “The people who run this place are stupid, brutal monsters for the most part. The people who run the straight world are brutal and monstrous, but they happen not to be quite as stupid, because the standard of competence out there is a little higher. The system does not promote justice and they perform these horrible acts at the cost of the inmate’s well
