Although many people think reality TV is actually “reality”, they should rethink their thought on what reality TV is. Reality TV is nothing but a joke because it has dangerous mixes of fantasies and realities. Ben Alexander states, “In fictionalized drama, real people do not get hurt, but in reality TV shows, despite the fantasy situations, participants—real people—can get hurt. What is worse, as viewers grow bored with the genre, the stakes will need to be raised. Reality TV participants will have to be put in increasingly greater physical and emotional peril in order for viewers to stay interested” (Alexander 1). The TV show House Hunters were found to be showing fake evidence. A television critic, Andy Dehnart found that, “The recent controversy over a participant on the HGTV reality show House Hunters claiming that parts of the show are faked provides insight into the amount of trust that viewers place in reality TV producers and the frequency with which that trust is broken. Such manipulation is not really necessary to create interesting reality shows; viewers want to see real situations that have real consequences on participants' lives (Dehnart 1). When people think of reality TV they are expecting to see real, creditable activity.
