The Connection between Social Networking and Society

The Internet is filled with numerous websites, but social networking websites are the favorites among the United States citizens. The United States spends a generous 20% of time on social networking websites on the computer and 30% on mobile devices (Popkin). As of 2009, the United States had 245 million Internet users and it has only increased (United States). It is clear that it is not only the US that uses the Internet or social networking websites. Pew Research Centers did a study and found statistics about adults on the Internet. 71% have an account on Facebook, 18% use Twitter, 17% post pictures on Instagram, and 21% use Pinterest (Social). This data doesn’t even include people below the age 18, and there are many teenagers that participate in these social networks. It is now clear that there are many people involved in social networking. These people all are a part of a society that has the ability to change and to be changed by social networks. Social networks and society are very closely related because both are created and shaped by the other.
SOCIAL NETWORKING COMPANIES IMPROVE SOCIETY
The creators of social networking websites generally made their website to help with communication throughout society, and they are still trying to improve communication through their companies. Instagram, Tumblr, and Facebook are all social networks and companies that are helping society with communication. Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, the co-founders of Instagram, wrote on the FAQ page of their website:
