The condition of the world is up to the common people who live there. In The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, the characters change their lives because of their drive and willingness to do what is right. The world is similar to the courage of the characters because the common people have the heart and the brains to change what needs to be changed and to learn from the past. Upper class Tyrants will always be challenged by the people, for the people all,over the world throughout history.
A 15 year old girl named Dorothy Gale lives with her dog toto, aunt Em, and Uncle Henry on a farm in kansas. magical land of OZ. This magical Land of Oz contains many strange things such as witches- good and bad, talking animals, munchkin civilizations, and flying monkeys. This bizarre place is ruled by a great all-knowing wizard who lives in the capitol, the emerald city, which turns almost everything green. When Dorothy goes back to the wizard a second time to ask for a way to get home, Toto the dog makes a discovery. Toto ran up next to a curtain by the wizards giant green head and pulled it down. Upon realizing the curtain was drawn the wizard exclaims “Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”. (Buam) In other words, ignore the truth that has been hidden to the lower class by the upper class and continue living in the shadow of the great and powerful Oz. An important symbol in this book that forces the lower class to be blinded to the truth are poppie flowers that make the main characters fall asleep. These poppies distract the protagonists from their main objective and in turn ruin the plans of reaching the Emerald
