The Comanche Indians

The Comanche have most recently been found in the Southern Plains, which stretches from Nebraska to the northern part of Texas. They were fully in Texas by the 1700’s. It is believed that the Comanche derived from the Shoshone Indians, found in Wyoming. The language spoken by the Comanche is actually a form of Uto-Aztecan language that when compared to the Shoshone language, the two are very similar. The Comanche’s were great warriors and did not really indulge in religious practices too much nor did they use folktales or legends very often.

The Comanche’s economy was mostly based on their lifestyle. Comanche’s were bands, not tribes, who would raid neighboring villages. This is one of the reasons why the Comanche were so difficult to defeat. The Comanche Would raid villages and steal many goods, but most importantly they would steal people. After stealing a person, the Comanche would hold almost like a fair and sell back the stolen person for a hefty ransom. This made the Comanche one of the earliest Indian groups to have money. The Comanche were also known for trading. Even though the Comanche traded goods that were stolen, they still managed to trade with other Indian groups and even trade with the Spanish. Each band of Comanche would actually have a leader skilled in trading, who would know how to speak Spanish, French and about four or five other Indian languages.

The Comanche Indians were a nomadic group, which came from Wyoming. They lived in lightweight tee pees that were easily transportable. The men were the hunters of buffalo and elk while the women were in charge of gathering other food, and maintaining a tidy tee pee. Whenever it was time for a Comanche band to leave, it...

Look real close at those little wood racks with the things hanging off them at the back right. Those are drying racks and the little strips of stuff hanging on them are buffalo meat drying to preserve it. The men at the left in front are playing some kind of game.

Creation Story

"One day the Great Spirit collected swirls of dust from the four directions in order to create the Comanche people. These people formed from the earth had the strength of mighty storms. Unfortunately, a shape-shifting demon was also created and began to torment the people. The Great Spirit cast the demon into a bottomless pit. To seek revenge the demon took refuge in the fangs and stingers of poisonous creatures and continues to harm people every chance it gets."
