Case/Offender This case study will discuss the actions of Charles Ponzi the iconic criminal that the term “Ponzi Scheme” is coined after. This will cover his scheme that stole millions with the use of postal coupons. Ponzi was an Italian born native who came to America when he was 21 with just $2.50 in his pocket. He had already done some time in prison for writing bad checks and helping Italians into the country. He tried to make his fortune multiple ways and failed each time before starting his scheme. The primary offender in this case study is Charles Ponzi. Charles individually scammed thousands of people out of their money. Charles Ponzi was charged with 86 counts of mail fraud which he plead guilty to. He was then sentenced to five years in a federal prison. He was eventually released and then had to stand trial for state larceny charges in Massachusetts. On the third trial he was convicted, but while on bail fled to Florida. While in Florida he tried to launch a similar scam but this time involving real-estate, which he was arrested and then convicted for as well. After that conviction he spent seven more years in prison. Overall, Ponzi spent 12 years in prison before being deported back to Italy where he continued to scam the government and had to flee the country (“Ponzi v. PIS”, n.d.). Ponzi’s sentencing was too lenient compared to the damage his crime caused. He was charged with 86 counts of mail fraud that should come with a sentence greater than ten years, yet he only was sentenced to five. Even when he was tried in the state trials his sentence was still too lenient. Seven years is longer than five, but he still did not receive an accurate punishment for his crimes. Also, most of his investors lost their money and went into bankruptcy and were never compensated for their loss, which should have been considered when deciding Ponzi’s punishment and prison
