The story of “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain takes place in Angels Camp, California. Angel’s camp is a gold mining community in the mid-19th century that the narrator claims to have visited to inquire about a Leonidas W. Smiley. Instead the narrator has to endure a tall tale about a gambling addicted Jim Smiley. Throughout the story Twain uses the setting to contrast between the East and West, and its people; ultimately, using the location and area to his advantage. Although the eastern and western United States aren’t specifically contrasted in this short comedy, one can see a definitive contrast between the educated refined narrator from the East and the uneducated but slick characters who populate Angels
Two stories with two different settings, plots, and characters and yet they have many similarities, with of course a few differences as well. There are many realistic similarities and differences between “Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain and “the Outcast of Poker Flat” by Bret Harte. Between the characters, plots, settings there are exceptional similarities and differences . The regionalistic qualities really shine through in all of these things.
What is the most important element of a good story? Although interesting characters, engaging plot development and didactic story lines certainly embellish the story, one could argue that the setting is the most crucial. Not only does the setting provide a baseline of necessary background information, it can also be used to enhance the story, just like the other elements listed. Edgar Allan Poe certainly takes advantage of this in “Hop Frog”, “The Cask of Amontillado”, and the “Masque of the Red Death”. In each of these stories, gruesome horrors occur, and because of the ingenious way Poe uses and manipulates the setting to his advantage, these stories’ horrors are amplified. I visited the Sacramento Zoo during the afternoon of April 21, 2017. The weather was wonderful, sunny, warm, and there was a slight breeze. It got a bit more breezy the longer I was there. Visiting the zoo to observe primates allowed me to become a little more aware of how primatologists study primates. The suggestion that America’s best satirist lived in Buffalo—a location that could provide a contemporary wit with a wide range of material—tickled my historical sensibilities. Nearly immediately, I began to speculate why America’s most famous writer would migrate to Buffalo. After I discarded my first ideas—the weather, the Buffalo Bills, the efficiency and effectiveness of our local political leaders—I concluded it must be because of a woman. Mark Twain’s “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” is a short story with the lesson that what goes around comes around. In this short story, which first appeared in 1856 and his first successful story, Twain uses local customs of the time, dialect, and examples of social status in his story to create a realistic view of the region in which the story takes place. The way that the characters behave is very distinctive. Dialect is also used to give the reader a convincing impression of the setting in “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”. The social status of the main characters in this story also was something that Twain took into account in writing this story. Mark Twain is a realist who concentrates on the customs, dialect, and social status of specific regions of the country.

Mark Twain, in his book “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” has given us a special look into the past through the eyes of a young boy. The epic story of an imaginative boy and a runaway slave adrift the Mississippi River on a journey of self-discovery, and the tale of an irrational, love-stricken social elite striving for a dream in the Roaring Twenties is the simplest explanation of the plots for two of American literature’s greatest novels, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby, respectively. These stories, both appearing to have little to no similarities between them, are habitually not put together as being common tales with common literary elements shared between them; however, this opinion can be refuted. His iconic works are timeless and have given inspiration the youth of America for decades. He distanced himself from formal writing and became one of the most celebrated humorists. Mark Twain’s use of the common vernacular set him apart from authors of his era giving his readers a sense of familiarity and emotional connection to his characters and himself.
