Career Choice #1 A career that I am very interested in, and eventually applying for; is the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police). I have always wanted join the RCMP ever since I was very young. The idea of being part of Canada's first federal police agency and the rich history that goes a long with it has inspired me to set my goals to become apart of them. Description The RCMP is the Canadian national police, it was born out of a need for a national police force to enforce the law in Canada’s newly acquired western territories. It began as the NWMP (North West Mounted Police) in 1873 with only one hundred and fifty recruits. Between then and now it has changed drastically, it currently has more than 28,000 members and continues to grow. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police offers over 150 specialized positions within itself from, there is no other police service in Canada that offers so many specialized positions. Educational Requirements The RCMP requires that you must have a secondary school diploma or equivalent, in fact on one of their brochures it specifies that a Police Foundations course is not required because you will learn all of the necessary things that a RCMP officer needs to know at the RCMP police college in Regina. Although the Royal Canadian Mounted Police only require that you have your high school education in order to be hired, it is still a very good idea to have some form of post secondary education in order to make yourself a more appealing candidate. RCMP Is my preferred career because being a police officer has always been a dream of mine, and I have always wanted to be involved in my community making a difference. I also would prefer the RCMP because of the pay difference, although there is not a large difference RCMP officer still do make. Another reason is because of the option to be posted anywhere in Canada such as small towns or big cities, where as in the CBSA you are generally only posted on boarders or near airports, and big cities.
