In “The Buffalos” William Carlos Williams writes, “Let me tell you a story (258).” I will tell you about my unpredictable job with drugs. After graduating high school, college was a not an option. I needed a job to help my mother economically and started working at Kmart our local retail store. It was a job with no future so I decided to optain a trade instead. I enrolled in a pharmacy technician program and after completing my training, I got my first job as a pharmacy technician. I never thought working at a pharmacy would be a dangerous choice. Sara was my new boss and owned the pharmacy with her husband. The clients at this pharmacy where mostly African Americans or Hispanics and many worked at the long beach port. I began to notice that a few customers would drop off many prescription belonging to other people. These prescriptions where for opioids (narcotic) pain medication, anxiety medication or cough syrups all prescribed in large quantities. I saw a customer walk in and went to greet him at the counter. He was a slender tall African American man wearing a hooded sweeter and carrying a bag. Many in the workforce are suffering and failing at getting better due to the desperation driving their addiction.
In the journal article, "The Frontier Army and the Destruction of the Buffalo: 1865-1883, Smits asserts that the United States ' post-Civil War frontier army was the driving figure in the near extermination of the Great Plains buffalo. This process, which was orchestrated at the highest level of command ,and carried out throughout this ranks, was launched in order to drive the Plains Indians tribes into reservations. If medical providers are not able to prescribe medications based on an individual's needs, an individual will go into his or her community to locate and purchase medications. This practice can be dangerous, as it is an unregulated amount of medication which can lead to an opioid overdose. Depending on the need of medication from individuals in the community, members will be prescribed medication and then sell their medication at an increased price.Many individuals will have multiple providers for opioid pain relievers and will even fake the need to visit an emergency room.

James Baldwin tells a story about an African American man named Sonny. The setting of the story takes place in the projects of Harlem New York during the nineteen fifties. The story is narrated by Sonny’s brother and in this story the narrator describes the hardships of growing up in the projects. Sonny was the family screw up for he fell into the life of crime and drug uses. Sonny fell into the life of crime for he grew up in Harlem where he “turned hard... the way kids can… in Harlem” (Baldwin 49). Sonny was especially into heroin or referred to as horse in this story. The rate of death due to prescription drug abuse in the U.S. has escalated 313 percent over the past decade. According to the Congressional Quarterly Transcription’s article "Rep. Joe Pitt Holds a Hearing on Prescription Drug Abuse," opioid prescription drugs were involved in 16,650 overdose-caused deaths in 2010, accounting for more deaths than from overdoses of heroin and cocaine. Prescribed drugs or painkillers sometimes "condemn a patient to lifelong addiction," according to Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This problem not only affects the lives of those who overdose but it affects the communities as well due to the convenience of being able to find these items in drug stores and such. Not to mention the fact that the doctors who prescribe these opioids often tend to misuse them as well. Abusing these prescribed drugs can “destroy dreams and abort great destinies," and end the possibility of the abuser to have a positive impact in the community.
