Lottery Man
The big man has recently won a lottery for the area so has quit his grueling work at the machine shop. As a kid the big man was an avid reader and aspired to become an intellectual but was forced through his father to start work at a very young age, not allowing the big man to live his dream. Having the big man win the lottery explains how his wife is dressed so nice with new clothes. This also explains why the big man would be seeking a bookstore in a basement that is secluded. The big man does not want to cause any attention to himself so goes to a book store that is not well occupied and start a collection of books in which he intends to read all of them.
In this scenario the relationship between the boy is one which the owner is annoyed with how the boy is always in the store but will not/cannot pay for books. Mr. Harris says “Some day he’s going to come in and buy that book and I’m going to go out of business from shock.” Mr. Harris does not care for the boy to much but is not a person who will say no to the boy, but will be willing to mislead the boy to try and get him to leave or pay for his books. The big man after the boy enters the conversation tries to show his intellect by a saying “I want to catch up on a few I’ve missed. Dickens I’ve always like his books”. The big man want to lead the boy on that he knows about the books but just “missed a few”. This changes through their conversation and the man goes from trying to compete to becoming jealous of the boy and how he was able to read all these books and how to boy challenges that he will read all these books and the big man just says “I really like to read”. To prove to the boy he is going to become an intellect like him. This desire seems to be increasing due to his jealously, this is why the big man ends up buying the Seven Types of Ambiguity. To prove to the boy he will even read an aesthetics book to gain even more
