The entertainment world has given birth to several of my nemesis’. Off the top of my head, Tom Six, Jaden Smith, Miley Cyrus and the worst of all Marc Webb who had to remake a dreadful rendition of the Amazing Spiderman Franchise. However, my hatred for the Big Bang Theory far exceeds the amalgamation of all these adversaries. The directors, Prady and Lorre are drop-dead boring and I have no idea whatsoever to how this series would be at any point intriguing or funny. Seriously, people who laugh at these lamentable gags are irrational, immature and most of all have no idea what a ‘real’ nerd looks or acts like. To keep it simple, the audience isn’t laughing together with Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard. The audience is laughing AT them. It becomes clearer if you watch the show focusing on Penny’s role. Through synecdoche, Penny represents the popular and socially functional people, and the four main protagonists are in a sense antagonized and positioned against Penny because of their differences. The worst part is that the Big Bang Theory’s comedy relies on positioning the audience as an outsider to the ‘nerd’ society and to be someone like Penny who doesn’t understand all the geeky scientific references that are made. That’s not the only unpleasant part. In a particular episode, there is a scene where the characters are playing dungeons and dragons and background laughter is utilized without a word being uttered. Isn’t it getting relatively clear that Chuck Lorre wants us to laugh at the fact that the characters play a dorky board game? This example is just the beginning of a never-ending list, including scenes such as laughing at the characters as they collect action figures, read comic books and dress as superheroes at a Halloween party.
