If someone gets a dog, they can get them for multiple reasons judging by the criteria they look for. If that someone is athletic, they would probably want an athletic and sporty dog, but at the same time they want to their dog to be attractive. But which one do they emphasize more? The same question can be asked about the Aztecs, but instead of a dog owner,historians. The Aztecs reined from 1350 to 1519, in what is present-day Mexico City. At the time, the Aztecs settled in a basin surrounded by towering, high mountain peaks. Their basin was about the size of Rhode Island. The weather was very unpredictable and the Aztec's basin collected water causing shallow lakes to form that they later used for agriculture. Their form of agriculture was called chinampas, also called "floating gardens". Chinampas were rows of crops that had been suspended on soil in the shallow lakes but, also connected to the ground by strong willow tree roots. The Aztecs would use canals to wade through the water and get to other chinampas. This genius idea helped raise their population to around 10 million and the Aztec's military power also helped increase the population, the capital (Tenochitlan) also had 300,000 citizens. But, in Texcoco in the beginning, it had a population of 10,000. At around 1434, the Aztecs demanded tribute and military service. At the same time, they had to keep their 128 deities happy, which they would do by performing ritual sacrifices and everyone felt that the ceremonies were beautiful. The Aztecs would also feast and dance. But, which should we stress more, agriculture or human sacrifice? Aztec agriculture should be emphasized more than human sacrifice because of three reasons: size, organization, and natural resources.

The Aztecs also grew reeds as well and used the chutes for frames to compact the soil together. Also using the land that they are provided with, the Aztecs used the shallow lakes to support the chinampas and the canals that they used to transport through the water. Not only did the Aztecs create and prosper, but they used whatever resources they could get from area around them.
Although there are good reasons for emphasizing human sacrifice, there are even better reasons for emphasizing agriculture. An example is the Aztecs' exceptional use of their surroundings, such as the willow trees for anchors, and reeds for frames. Human sacrifice can be also emphasized for the Aztecs' belief that the Gods needed blood, but the spotlight is on agriculture.

The perspective of another society is always subjective, especially when two completely different cultures interact for the first time. In Bernal Diaz del Castillo’s The History of the Conquest of New Spain, the first-hand account illustrates a barbaric and pagan society where sacrifices are pervasive in everyday life. However, David Carrasco’s essays titled “The Exaggeration of Human Sacrifice” and “Human Sacrifice / Debt Payments from the Aztec Point of View” shed a significant amount of insight into the religious roles that human sacrifice played in Aztec society, rather than the cruel and barbaric connotations which Daz heavily implied. Based on the readings of Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Carrasco’s essays offered an outside perspective into the ritualistic practices of human sacrifice and in doing so, introduced the concept of nextlaoalli as well as the commonality of the ritual human sacrifice in Aztec society.

Ancient Maya pyramids, now encompassed by the forest or explored by tourists, have long been viewed as mysterious places of sacrifice and bloodletting rituals. Though the religious significance of Maya pyramids has long been recognized, the casual traveler may pass right by other, less-imposing but no less important, places of religious meaning to the Maya. The small, community churches constructed during colonial times were central to religious activity in the cah. The milpa field, where corn was grown with the kol and kash cycles of slash and burn agriculture, was also a focal point of religious ceremonies performed by the humble Maya farmer. The Classical pyramid, the community church, and the milpa field were all places of religious significance for the Maya. Despite the differences in form, these were all places where the Maya could commune with or venerate higher powers, with or without the aid of an intermediary. The degree of individual involvement varied, but the basic ceremonial components of offering food or sacrifice to and communicating with deities remained the same.

The Aztecs cosmology was a unique combination of mythology. Their beliefs about themselves and their purpose were not something they took lightly. “The mystic-militaristic approach characteristic of Aztec religion…felt that the purpose of man’s creation was to provide blood for the maintenance of the Sun’s life” (Leon-Portilla, Aztec Thought & Culture, 122). With this perspective of themselves, the Aztecs believed that human sacrifice was not only justified but necessary for the lives of civilization. Simply put, mankind was “food” for god.
To begin with, the Aztec's cruel tribute system allowed Cortes to act as a liberator. The process of human sacrifice was extremely common and was feared by the majority of the common people. The Aztecs as a nourishment for the Sun and all other gods needed human sacrifice. The Aztecs sacrificed between 10,000 and 50,000 victims per year. As the majority of those who were sacrificed were war captives who opposed the Aztecs, they obviously greatly feared the brutal tribute system. However not only war captives were sacrifices, common adults and children were also sacrificed at times. Cortes himself was disgusted at the thought of human sacrifice, this allowed him to gain Indian allies as well as gain respect among Mexican tribes that feared and opposed the Aztecs. The majority of the population feared the process therefore making Cortes, whom despised the process, an appealing alternative.
