“My God, what have we done?” were the words that the co-pilot of Enola Gay wrote in his logbook after helping drop two bombs, one in Hiroshima and one in Nagasaki, that killed an estimated two-hundred thousand individuals. The bombings were completely unnecessary. Japan was already defeated because they lacked the necessary materials to continue a world war. The Japanese were prepared to surrender. There was no military necessity to drop the atomic bombs nor is there any factual information stating that the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were dropped to “save the lives of one million American soldiers.” The United States bombed Japan in August of 1945. The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were uncalled for and could have been avoided.
My first point to support that the atomic bombings were unneeded is that there was no military necessity. All of the United States Corps knew that Japan was defenseless by the middle of 1945. “Japan was already defeated and dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary.”(Freeman, 2006) You may think that those words came out of the mouth of someone that favors Japan over America, but the words are the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe in 1945, Dwight D. Eisenhower, when the bombs were dropped. Numerous individuals had the same opinion as Eisenhower. For example, President Truman’s Chief of Staff, Admiral William D. Leahy said “The use of [the atomic bombs] at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan.” (Freeman 2006) Individuals try to defend America by saying that it was needed to save American lives, but that is not true. ...ings by saying that it saved millions of Americans, but I came to find out that, that wasn’t so true. While looking through many articles, books, and databases, I realized that before getting this assignment I only knew the things that were shared with me about this subject. I knew what everyone wanted me to know and I never questioned it. I believed that if our country were to bomb someone, they’d have justifiable reasons as to why they did it. This event taught me that just because there are a few myths as to why something happened, you don’t have to agree with them. America is my home, but never will I ever agree that the dropping of Little Boy and Fat Man on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were necessary. They could have been avoided and lives could have been saved. The bombings on August 6th, 1945 and August 9th, 1945 were the beginning of the end.
