More than half a century ago people from countries all over the world came to America. America at this time was the greatest place to be. You could restart your life, or as it was described as the land of opportunity. This was a place where you were judged by not who your father was, but what you make of your self. Most came for a better life, while some came for political reasons. The older immigrants came from Europe and the newer ones came from Asia. Half of the immigrants settled in cities across the country.
Many authors wrote about the American dream describing the struggles that many people suffered during this experience, authors also wrote about the differences of the American Dream. As one author Carl Sandburg describes how a city acts in this country, and how the immigrants working conditions were in his poem “Chicago.” He describes the city as “Hog Butcher of the World, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat,” which explains the power of the city. “Under the terrible burden of destiny laughing as a young man laughs,” He describes how the city goes through terrible situations it will always prevail as the power of the world. Giving many jobs, supplying the country with goods, and trading goods throughout the world. Carl Sandburg believes that the American Dream is to work hard to be the best no matter what. How Chicago can be as powerful as any other in the world a leader so to speak.

In the chapter entitled, “American Dreams,” In Creating America, Joyce Moser and Ann Watters write:
The main characters of this novel are Ralph, Jack, Simon, and Piggy. Ralph, who represents civilizing instinct, is elected as the leader of the group of the boys and tries to promote harmony among themselves. Even though he seeks to lead the group and defeats Jack in the election, he doesn’t try to dominate people. Rather, he focuses on the group’s common interest of being rescued. For example, he gives responsibility to the hunters to keep a signal fire while he tries to make a shelter. Unlike Ralph, Jack would like to dominate people. This is especially evident once he becomes the leader of the hunters on the island. He tends to show the other boys how strong and brave he is while expressing his dominance over them. By the end of the novel, Jack usurps Ralph to become the general leader, in which position he shows how barbaric and cruel he can be.
The assignment was an English paper, that she had no idea how to this paper. Like most of us do, she freaked out. She called her mother, and her mother basically said that she was screwed. Most parents when we tell them about our grades, or anything worrying us can give us advice or help but Jennie was not so lucky. She freaked out because in reality, who 's actually prepared for their first college paper? No freshman is actually prepared for such an assignment. I wasn 't preprared either. She says “I called my mom and in tears told her that I had to come home, that I 'd made a terrible mistake” (Crucet 3). Crucet is obviously facing fear here. She was facing fear because for once, maybe she actually did not know what to do. As a freshman, we go into college preparing to do as well as we did in high school. Jennie quickly realized college is a completely new environment for her and I feel like her fear is quite normal for any freshman college
The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. “In the years immediately after the completion of The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald was unable to provide his art with any such endorsement” (Collins). Fitzgerald was unable to get his book published because of insufficient funds. According to Harris, “F Scott Fitzgerald wrote his greatest novel in France in 1924, having exiled himself in order to get some work done” (Harris). The best novel Fitzgerald has written he wrote when he was in France. According to Kenneth, “The hard work was the eleven stories and articles Fitzgerald wrote in six months to get himself out of debt after the failure of The Vegetable.”(Kenneth). F. Scott Fitzgerald was a very hardworking author when his book The Vegetable became a failure. It took him eleven stories and articles written in six months to get him out of debt.
In Jennine Crucet’s story, “Taking My Parents to College” she really explains to the reader how challenging it was leaving home and starting a new chapter in her life. When the author and her family first arrived to Cornell University, they were sitting there when the dean ended his speech with: “Now, parents, please: Go!” Being a first generation college student Crucet nor her family had any idea that they were not supposed to stay for orientation and had to leave her as soon as they got her settled in. They did not even have all the right materials and supplies that she needed to begin with by stating, “Every afternoon that week, we had to go back to the only department store we could find, the now-defunct Ames, for some stupid thing we hadn’t known was a necessity, something not in our budget: shower shoes, extra-long twin sheets, mesh laundry bags.” Both Crucet and I suffered from similar issues during our first few weeks on our new journey in college and we both had no idea what was ahead of us.
As everyone knows, teen pregnancy rate is increasing more and more each day and someone needs to do something to try and either stop it or decrease it dramatically. Teen pregnancy is causing dramatic population increase and that’s just common sense. Teens getting pregnant at such a young age is also causing poverty levels to go up more and more. Mississippi Spent over $100 million on teen pregnancy alone in the year 2010 (“Teen Pregnancy”). Just think of what it is now. More teens are dropping out of school and not finishing their education. According to the authors of this article, “approximately 30 percent of teen mothers have mothers who dropped out of high school, 40 percent have mothers who are mothers who dropped out of high school, 40 percent have mothers who are high school graduates, and 30 percent have mothers who attended college”(Kearny et al 143). Many people don’t realize that there are many effects of teen pregnancy including higher risk of birth defect, more likely to drop out, and also abortion rates increase.
The American Dream, as defined by the Cambridge Dictionary, is the belief that everyone in the United States of America has the chance to be successful and happy if they work hard enough. This idea is one of the major reason why America is the place most people from all over the world want to travel to in order to pursue the American Dream. The American Beauty is a movie that tells a story of what it takes to pursue the American Dream. In the movie, many sides of the American Dream were depicted by different characters in different ways but with similar experiences involving the cost and challenges of pursuing success. Jane is a young lady in the movie who suffered from a dysfunctional family. The lack of love in her home, which was due to her parents’ drive for success, did not only make her an unhappy girl but also led her into seeking love and attention in the hands of a drug dealer.
The ‘American Dream’ means different things to each individual. What the ‘American Dream’ means to me is that I’m an American citizen who is free to do as I please under certain circumstances of course. I understand that many people have troubles trying to achieve this ‘American Dream’ though. If you look at the illegal immigrant problem, they have problems achieving this American Dream. I know that to get into the United States of America, you have to take a test, along with years of being in the system until you’re picked. You also cannot be a criminal and either you come here to work or you come here to stay; it costs quite a bit as well to achieve this dream. In my opinion it makes me mad when people come here illegally and claim that they
“The great Gatsby” is an inspiring novel written by the famous American author Scott Fitzgerald. The novel was published in 1925. It is regarded as Scott’s supreme achievement and also as a masterwork in American literature, and it’s entirely justified.
The New World: a land of promise and aspirations. America: land of the free and home of the brave. The United States of America: a place filled with opportunities for everyone. When the country was still young, foreigners looked upon America as a utopia for the world. At one point in time it was that utopia, but over the years so many adverse rules and biased beliefs have built up that America is no longer a welcoming place for everyone. This is especially true for immigrants. No longer are they the huddled masses yearning for freedom that we praise from the past, but now their fight for liberty has been forgotten and our country has failed to welcome them. Millions of immigrant moved to America in search of freedom, equality, and success. This is known as the “American Dream”. A famous author names James Truslow Adams stated, “Life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement” (The Epic of America p.214-15). In other words, he believes that the American dream gives everyone the opportunity to reach an ideal place where you can be happy and successful; you can get there from your ability and achievement as stated above. The American dream made immigrants believe that they have a chance of receive equal opportunity, but when they got here they realize that it was a myth. Whiling living in American they realize that they were limited on education, voting rights, and jobs opportunity.
To do what makes oneself happy. The American Dream is represented in many different ways and every person lives and chases a different version of the American Dream. Chris McCandless lived his American dream by walking alone into the wilderness of Alaska. The song written by Toby Keith, “American Soldier”, shows the price some pay for their dreams and ours to come true. Jay Gatsby died trying to acheive his dream and get the girl he loved, but died happy because he had pursued her until his death. The band All Time Low wrote a song called “The Reckless and The Brave” that brings a new light to how we go about achieving our dreams. So I believe that the American Dream is all about doing what will make you the happiest in the end.
The American dream is an ambiguous notion, each person with their own unique opinion based on their current circumstance and past experiences. In my opinion, the American dream is about achieving happiness and contentment through pursuing one's personal fulfillment and validating one's self-worth, where one can achieve their fullest according to their capabilities and be recognized for their accomplishments, disregarding their race, ethnicity, or social status. The American Dream, although not easily acquired, is achievable through hard work and dedication. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech, “I Have a Dream”, and John Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice and Men, exemplify their personal views on this ambiguous subject.
In the Oxford Dictionary, the American Dream is defined as the traditional social ideals of the United States of America: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. People have the right of life and liberty, but happiness is not a right. Happiness can only be given by the amount of effort a person gives. People who have determination to devote their Life and exercise their Liberty to the accomplishment of discovering their talent and use what they like doing to achieve a goal. The film, Pursuit of Happiness, shows the American Dream being achieved by the main character, Chris Gardner, by working hard and using his talents. Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness goes through overcoming obstacles which shows that the American Dream is possible through faith, perseverance, and a focus on family values.
Statistics show that teen pregnancy has declined since past years but still continues to be a problem among adolescents. For example from 1990 to 2010 the teen birth rate has declined from 61.8 to 29.4 for every one thousand teen girls (Teen Pregnancy & Childbearing 1). Even with a decrease from the past twenty years, National statistics show that in 2012 there were still 305,388 teen births. On average there were twenty-nine births for every one thousand girls and only fifty-four percent were planned. More pregnancies occur among girls of minority. For example forty-six out of every one thousand girls of Hispanic descent were pregnant in 2012 while African American girls had close to forty-four for every one thousand. Compared to Caucasians they had more than half of the number of teen births in the year of 2012. With a drastically large number of teen births in the year of 2012 alone, 9.4 billion dollars were spent on teen childbearing. New York State alone spent 337 million for 12,592 teen births. The number of teen pregnancies compared to teen births also has a drastic difference. For example the teen pregnancy rate was 41,590 in the year of 2012, compared to 12,592 births.
