In the short story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, we, as readers, figure out how Sherlock Holmes solved the mystery. Sherlock Holmes is a detective who lives in England. Doctor Watson is a medical doctor, who aided Sherlock Holmes in solving cases. Helen Stoner is a wealthy woman, whose sister passed away two years prior to the story. Doctor Roylott is the step- father of Helen Stoner. The story mainly takes place in the Roylott Stoke Maron Manor in April 1883. Early one morning, Helen Stoner confronted Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in their office. Helen asked Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery behind her sister, Julia Stoner’s, death. The main conflict is Helen Stoner feared for her life and
Later that evening, Doctor Roylott, unaware of Holmes and Watson’s presence, sent the snake into Helen’s room to attempt to end her life. This reveals the interwoven conflict of Helen Stoner versus Doctor Roylott. When Sherlock spotted the snake and struck it, he sent the deadly snake back to Doctor Roylott. This event introduced the conflict of Sherlock Holmes versus Doctor Roylott. At this point in the story, the mood had shifted from anxious to being petrified. Helen saw the creature that ended her sister’s life, at that time she realized her life was in jeopardy as well! The tone changed to challenging. Doctor Roylott’s intelligence and greed drove him to plan the murder of his step-daughter. Due to the detective’s keen state of focus, he saved Helen Stoner’s life. The clues discovered by Sherlock Holmes aided in the unraveling of the mystery. For example, the bolted bed, the hole in the ventilation, the false bell, are all clues which helped decipher the mystery. The cruel Doctor Roylott’s plan to kill Helen Stoner
The resolution to the interwoven conflict, Sherlock Holmes versus Doctor Roylott, was the death of Doctor Roylott. Sherlock Holmes would not have to worry about the threat Doctor Roylott gave to him. Another interwoven conflict was Helen Stoner versus Doctor Roylott. The resolution to this conflict was Helen did not have to fear that she would die prior to her wedding. Lastly, the conflict of Doctor Roylott versus the society resulted in Doctor Roylott’s death. If Doctor Roylott was still alive, he would still be a threat to society. Helen Stoner’s final reaction was that she was relieved that Doctor Roylott is no longer a threat for the reason that he is dead. Sherlock Holmes was ecstatic about Doctor Roylott’s, in addition to completing the case Helen Stoner had given him. Doctor Roylott, moments prior to his death, was shocked.
