In the short story “The Adventure of the Speckled Band” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, we, as readers, figure out how Sherlock Holmes solved the mystery. Sherlock Holmes is a detective who lives in England. Doctor Watson is a medical doctor, who aided Sherlock Holmes in solving cases. Helen Stoner is a wealthy woman, whose sister passed away two years prior to the story. Doctor Roylott is the step- father of Helen Stoner. The story mainly takes place in the Roylott Stoke Maron Manor in April 1883. Early one morning, Helen Stoner confronted Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson in their office. Helen asked Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery behind her sister, Julia Stoner’s, death. The main conflict is Helen Stoner feared for her life and
Later that evening, Doctor Roylott, unaware of Holmes and Watson’s presence, sent the snake into Helen’s room to attempt to end her life. This reveals the interwoven conflict of Helen Stoner versus Doctor Roylott. When Sherlock spotted the snake and struck it, he sent the deadly snake back to Doctor Roylott. This event introduced the conflict of Sherlock Holmes versus Doctor Roylott. At this point in the story, the mood had shifted from anxious to being petrified. Helen saw the creature that ended her sister’s life, at that time she realized her life was in jeopardy as well! The tone changed to challenging. Doctor Roylott’s intelligence and greed drove him to plan the murder of his step-daughter. Due to the detective’s keen state of focus, he saved Helen Stoner’s life. The clues discovered by Sherlock Holmes aided in the unraveling of the mystery. The resolution to the interwoven conflict, Sherlock Holmes versus Doctor Roylott, was the death of Doctor Roylott. Sherlock Holmes would not have to worry about the threat Doctor Roylott gave to him. Another interwoven conflict was Helen Stoner versus Doctor Roylott. The resolution to this conflict was Helen did not have to fear that she would die prior to her wedding. Lastly, the conflict of Doctor Roylott versus the society resulted in Doctor Roylott’s death. If Doctor Roylott was still alive, he would still be a threat to society. Helen Stoner’s final reaction was that she was relieved that Doctor Roylott is no longer a threat for the reason that he is dead. Sherlock Holmes was ecstatic about Doctor Roylott’s, in addition to completing the case Helen Stoner had given him. Doctor Roylott, moments prior to his death, was shocked. Holmes and Watson were to guard Helen from a mysterious whistle she heard in the early morning, every single morning. The whistle she heard was the same whistle that Julia (her sister) had heard when she came upon her fate. The night that they were going to investigate, they stayed in Helen’s room; Julia’s old room. They woke up to the whistle and Holmes smacked the snake in the face. The snake ended up going back into Dr. Roylott’s room and killing him by venom. Helen was saved by Holmes in the situation where she would have been murdered by her own father and let her be married with no interference. Holmes, however, could have done another action that did not include hitting the snake and making it bite Dr. Roylott. Holmes had banged the snake in the head, which caused it to be aggravated and bite the first person it saw. Holmes could not have predicted where Dr. Roylott was sitting in his
For a while he finished the stories, but with debts and great public support he created another collection of the Holmes stories, due to the fact they were in high demand. Conan Doyle sadly died in Crowborough, Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930. Holmes is an intellectual detective who although spends a lot of the time by his self still depend on a valiant partner to accompany him on his cases, in this case Dr Watson. Dr Watson, in the Sherlock Holmes stories, is portrayed as particularly as an average British person helping his friend in his cases. Because he is portrayed as this it helps us see ourselves in the story along with Holmes therefore, intriguing the reader to usually read more.
This shows as at the start. there is an air of panic as Watson and Holmes have been knocked up. as a young lady had arrived in a considerable state of excitement. The murder setting is also typical as it is in a large country manor. owned by the well-known Surry Family of the Roylotts of Stoke Moran.
Watson than there is in the short story. In the case of Helen Stoner, the movie allows you to see aspects of her character that you do not see in the written story such as her relationship with her sister and stepfather. While it does say in the book that the sisters were “chatting about her approaching wedding,” more development is present in the movie because it shows the sisters together reminding the audience that they were close companions and that the loss of Julia was devastating to Helen. Another example of this character development is with Dr. Watson. In the movie adaptation, a short clip was added while Holmes and Watson investigated the house in which Julia had died. In the clip, Dr. Watson is shown examining foot prints on the lawn and explains to Holmes that he is trying to be as observant as he is. Though this clip may not seem like an important part of the story, it adds to Watson’s character by showing him as a student of Sherlock Holmes. While the movie does make the characters more dynamic, it also removed some of the suspense that the written version created.
Every time Holmes got new information about the problem or Helen Stoner, he became more and more enthusiastic which made Him even keener to solve it. He was very cautious about who he spoke to. To solve the mystery in the best way Sherlock Holmes could, he examined every possibility there was, very carefully. The story of the Speckled Band was written from Watson’s point of view.
The story ‘Scandal in Bohemia’ starts of very odd, “To Sherlock Holmes, she is always the woman’. This has already given the reader a hint of suspense as it is something unusual. It was always thought that Holmes had no feelings and no emotions for anyone, but according to this opening the above phrase is incorrect. Conan Doyle has already captured the reader’s attention in a different kind of way, whereas in his other stories such as ‘Red Headed League’ He has the reader interested in a different style. ‘And found him in deep conversation with a very stout, florid-faced, elderly gentleman with fiery red hair.’ This is one part from the opening, notice how it differs from Scandal in Bohemia, yet you still want to know what happens next-why Holmes was in such ‘deep conversation’ and why Doyle has described the elderly gentlemen in a very descriptive way.

Out of all the women in Holmes’ life it was his second wife, Myrtle Z. Bellman’s father Holmes tried to swindle and kill, he was unsuccessful (America’s Serial Killers).

Sherlock Holmes, one of the most famous fictional characters in literary history is a detective capable of solving the most complex mysteries. The author behind the character, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a very successful British writer. The majority of his literary success is due to his crime-fiction tales such as the Sherlock Holmes series. However, Mr. Doyle and Mr. Holmes himself must not take all the credit because there is another character that plays a major role in the stories success. He goes by the name of Dr. Watson, Holmes’ sidekick. The importance of Dr. Watson is evident in many of Doyle’s stories such as A Scandal in Bohemia and A Study in Scarlett.
Conflict creates “rising action” leading the character towards the climax of the story. In the story it seemed that there was external conflict between Dr. Roylott, the stepfather and the two daughters. It appeared to be conflict of interest due to the inheritance of the money. He killed the first daughter and tried to kill the second daughter in order for him to receive all the money. The different conflict that was explored was man versus man, Sherlock Holmes versus Dr. Roylott. Dr. Roylott appears at Sherlocks Holmes’s home, frustrated because his stepdaughter went to Holmes for help; the quote used “I will do nothing of the kind. My stepdaughter has been here. I have traced her. What has she been saying to you?.” Roylott threatened Holmes to not interfere, but he does either way. Holmes going to Roylotts house made the story more interesting for the readers with regards the different finds that he saw. An internal conflict seems to arise with Helen and her stepfather. She loves her stepfather but is afraid that he might have something to do with her sister’s death. This causes Holmes to investigate the

In 1887, Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but only in 1891, in A Scandal in Bohemia that Holmes’ stories became very famous, and eventually, Holmes’ adventures got adapted for film. Lately, in 2010 BBC made a series called “Sherlock”, and the first episode is called “A Study in Pink” referring to the first book where Sherlock Holmes was introduced. The TV adaptation is significantly more effective in showing the relationship between Holmes and Watson with changes made to the plot and characters.
