Public health is one field that works alongside many other aspects of society. Public health cannot work alone. Instead, public health officials work together, as well as other individuals in society, in order to promote the general health and wellness of all individuals in the population or community. Thus, public health officials closely work alongside our government in order to achieve this general wellness, including at the federal, state, and local levels of government. At all of these levels of government, officials work in order to promote the general health of not only individuals suffering from poor health, but also individuals around the area and who are affected by those in poor health. Due to governmental regulations, smoking in indoor, public places is now prohibited. This is due to the government pushing for a “no cigarette” and “no smoking” campaign throughout the United States. However, smoking is still present and permitted in public, outdoor spaces. In this reading, a case study/scenario was followed in order to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the government implementing a “no smoking” in outdoor, public spaces campaign. Throughout the text, the authors exhibited both the support and the obligations towards this campaign. The authors showcase many of the points that ultimately promotes the advantages to a ban on smoking in outdoor public places. For instance, many supporters for the ban argue that this will ultimately reduce the risk of secondhand smoke exposure in the community. For many individuals who do not smoke, secondhand smoke exposure is an aspect of the community that frightens them due to the fact that morbidity may occur to something out of their control. This affects not only individuals who are currently smoking, but also individuals around and in the community. The effects of smoking is detrimental to all individuals in the community, smoker or not. Therefore, the stance of supporting the ban against smoking in outdoor, public places is one that I thoroughly believe will be beneficial to all members of society. Overall, the support and objections made regarding smoking in outdoor, public places exhibits many of the ethical dilemmas present in public health today, and one that involves and incorporates the decisions made by public health and governmental
