In 1956, the 670 Eames Lounge Chair together with its ottoman made a debut on the Home show hosted by Arlene Francis on NBC. Designed by Charles & Ray Eames, the then new masterpiece was said to be the ‘modernised version of the old English club chair’ which later became a true design icon of the 20th Century.
History of 670 Eames Lounge Chair
Charles & Ray Eames, a prolific duo well known for their objective to design furniture for mass production and retailed at affordable cost came up with one of the most unique seating collection during their time. Charles Eames wanted to fulfil the need for an adequately proportionate lounge chair that provides comfort, fabricated from the highest quality material and produced with good craftsmanship. Contrary to their initial objective, the duo developed a design for a rather up-scaled piece that was made to be luxurious and originally not intended for mass production.
Back in 1940, the husband and wife together with Eero Saarinen, took part in The Museum of Modern Art’s Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. It was for this competition where they explored and studied plywood to be made adaptable to the contour of the human body and flexibility according to the design they had in mind. This material however, had splintered and cracked on many of their attempts. A great amount of time for their experiment was spent on analysing the resilience of the plywood. The whole development process for the chair itself took thirteen years to be fully completed and finally produced.

...aces such as bachelors pad, family rooms and study. By the existence of such replicas, the chair loses it exclusivity and value. It simply changes the kind of appreciation we have for the original piece of furniture. Replicas of such great pieces fail to show honour and respect to the designers and its heritage.
However, the value of the chair has never once decrease since the day it has been made, which shows how the chair has managed to retain its level of exclusivity throughout these years.

The book which I chose to share called Peter’s Chair written by Ezra Jack Keats. In the story, there is a boy named Peter whose parents just have a new born baby. Peter notices many things have changed around his house. His parents paint his old cradle, high chair and crib in pink and give them to his baby sister. Peter knows he needs to do something to prevent giving away of his favorite chair. Therefore, Peter decides to run always with all his favorite things and his dog, Willie. While Peter is being outsides, he sits on his chair and realizes that he is too big to the chair. He goes back home and tells his father that he would like to paint the chair in pink and give it to his little sister.
Marcel Breuer, born in the early 1900’s in Hungary, was one of the first and youngest students to learn under the Bauhaus style, taught by Walter Gropius. Breuer started his career designing furniture, using tubular, or “handle bar like”, steel (Dodd, Mead, and Company 32). One of the most popular of these furniture designs was his Club Chair B3designed in 1922. In the 1930’s, Breuer moved to the United States to teach and practice architecture. In the 1950’s, he received the Medal of Honor from the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Between 1960 and 1980, Breuer was honored with several honorary doctoral degrees from several universities around the world. After retiring in 1976 due to poor health, Breuer was awarded several other awards, and his work was displayed in exhibitions around the world. Breuer died on July 2nd, 1981, at the age of 79 (Marcel Breuer Associates 6).
In 1930, the Sears Home Construction Division issued a report that examined the types of house designs that the company sold since 1908. They analyzed what architectural styles their customers liked best during each time period.
The hard edge bricks that fundamentally built the popular toy industry were created by a Danish master carpenter form Denmark. Ole Kirk Kristiansen purchased a workshop in the small town of Billund and began to build houses and furniture. When the Great Depression started becoming an intimidating force to close his workshop permanently, he reached for his real passion creating toys for kids in 1932. The time was even harder in 1934 for Kristiansen, combating the loss of his wife and raising 4 young boys and founding LEGO. While it is true Ole Kirk was not the first to create these plastic bricks, he was the first man to introduce the “Automatic Binding Bricks” and they were altered off a British inventor who created a comparable product called the “Kiddicraft brick”. The role Ole Kirk Kristiansen played in the evolution of popular toys is ingenious. His invention is still admired by young to old people all over the world today. Ole Kirk’s impact can be unstated through the candy colored bricks he produced, his significance as a pop culture icon, and lasting presence of his legacy of LEGO in today’s society.
