There is evidence throughout the book that there is a war going on but the most prevalent one is when the boys are sleeping and there is a plane explosion in the sky that brings down a man in a parachute. The story most likely takes place somewhere in the late 1940’s to the 1950’s. A person can guess the amount of time on the Island by the physical appearance of the boys because the author, William Golding, does not specify an exact amount of time. All the author gives us to indicate the time spent on the Island is that the boys’ hair has grown rather long and their clothes are almost completely destroyed. The young boys, or littluns, have the appearance of malnutrition which suggests that the young boys have not been eating the proper food that they should been for quite some time. With this information a person could conclude that they have perhaps been on the Island for a year or just a little over a
The setting of the book takes place in Gloucester, Massachusetts. And in the grand banks of the atlantic ocean and on the boat of the Andrea Gail. I put a picture of the town of Gloucester and their harbor which represents their home and their last time on land before the crew died. The Andrea Gail was the only boat that got caught in one of the roughest storms in history and was not found until years later. The map of the three grand banks shows the spots where the Sword fishermen would go to catch fish and spend their time out at sea.The Crow’s Nest bar is the second home of the crew and would be forever empty without the presence of the crew on the Andrea Gail even when the bar is full it’s still empty.
As the final days of World War One slowly drudged through the month of November, a war torn Europe left separated and waiting to be picked up and pasted back together. An astonishing number of thirty-eight million dead between the Allied Powers and the Central Powers during a war that took over four years to come to an end. The main players during 1914 - 1918 were Britain and Germany, however this rivalry did not begin simply because of World War One and all the logistics of those four years. In the other corner, Germany, led by Kaiser Wilhelm II was fueled and willing to go at whatever cost necessary to back up their Triple Alliance member Austria-Hungary. The 1920s are known as the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age, and the Golden Twenties. During this time, there were dramatic social changes in society. The Great War destroyed old perceived social conventions and new ones were developed. The 1920s was a decade that saw a great change in the role of women. The Roaring Twenties was a common name for the 1920s, due to the rise in consumerism and advertising at the time. Morals began to decrease during this time period. The 1920s was a period of time with great societal changes.

In 1934, the death of President Hindenburg of Germany removed the last remaining obstacle for Adolf Hitler to assume power. Soon thereafter, he declared himself President and Fuehrer, which means “supreme leader”. That was just the beginning of what would almost 12 years of Jewish persecution in Germany, mainly because of Hitler’s hatred towards the Jews.
