For my proposal, I will be conducting my research using the general method of Textual Analysis. Textual Analysis is a path for specialists to assemble data about how other people comprehend the world. It is a strategy - an information gathering process - for those analysts who need to comprehend the routes in which individuals from different societies and subcultures understand their identity, and of how they fit into the world in which they live. In a quantitative content analysis, finding the number of times a word and/or image appears in a text or multiple texts is a way to record such information. In a qualitative textual analysis, the historical context of the texts being studied can be evaluated instead. It is possible to analyze the relationships between different texts, the possible images within those texts and the sources in those texts that are used to support the texts’ ideas. Quantitative content analysis would target counting or measuring specific parts of a topic, which would then require us to separate each text into a series of numerical details and categories. Sitcoms use certain words and techniques in their programming in order to follow the correct format. I want to examine the language and common phrasing that is used. In addition, I want to look at the structure of situational comedies and what elements repeat in them, which allows us to categorize them as such. In situation comedies, they usually follow similar narratives. Sitcoms tend to have similar (sometimes formulaic) storylines and structures, predictable scenarios, episodes, challenges, conflicts and resolutions. Characters will often follow similar characterizations throughout the show, fitting the roles of typical stereotypes. And basic themes and subject matter will become more prevalent as the research goes on. These are all details I will be studying in terms of occurrence and context within each situation

The word sitcom is short for Situation Comedy. A good sitcom story idea places the star (or supporting character) into a situation in need of a resolution, which will cause the character to respond in unexpected, exaggerated, and hugely sidesplitting ways (Rannow, pg. 13). A comedy now days are different from how they were in the 1960's and 1970's though. Today directors use sexual content and foul language to make people laugh and do not usually have a purpose or point to get across to the audience with each show. In earlier comedy, such as The Brady Bunch, Director Jack Arnold tried have a lesson learned in each episode while still maintaining a sense of humor, minus the foul language and sexual content. Although the show is not extremely funny to most people it is still a classic show that deserves to be remembered.
American families depicted in television comedy shows outwardly appear as stereotypical characters. Extreme contrasting types are used to exaggerate real life: wealthy or poor, urban or rural, and sophisticated or naïve. This is not only for entertainment value, it seems: the characteristics of these families can represent the diversity within the families across our nation. As a show develops it can reach out to the audience by touching on more realistic values. A demonstration of how a television family deals with an issue can make that family appear to be even more similar to each other and comparable to real American families as well. In this paper, the Cosby show and Rosanne will be compared.
The article I have chosen for my rhetorical analysis is #Gamergate Trolls Aren’t Ethics Crusaders; They’re a hate group because it seemed interesting. The reason I was drawn to this article was because of the title, I was interested to know what it meant. This article, written by Jennifer Allaway, is about gamergate, an online gaming community, and the hate they show towards others. Jennifer does research on sexism in videogames and how it correlates to the gamers that play these games. For a large part of the history of TV sitcoms women have been portrayed as mothers or as having to fulfill the woman's role in the private sphere. Family based sitcoms were one of the forms of sitcom that keep women in these roles, but what is interesting is that even in other forms of sitcoms women do not truly escape these roles. Sitcoms, like Sex and the City and Murphy Brown showcase women whom have seemingly escaped these roles, by showing liberated women, but that does not mean that both do not fall into the gender role showcased in family sitcoms. When we perform a textual analysis on a text, we make an informed assumption probably the most likely understandings that may be made of that text.
