Social Skill Deterioration Caused by the Texting Phenomenon Back before texting became popular, dating involved seeing the person face to face and being able to hold a pleasant conversation. Today’s version of dating involves almost nonstop texting between couples. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. Texting does not require young couples to see each other to be in a relationship, which can cause deterioration in social skills needed later in life. The real world requires that young people know how to hold a conversation. Childhood and young adulthood are the times created for us to practice skills needed in the real world, and texting is taking this away from the texting generation. The first step in analyzing the problem is too see what there was to what there is today. Back before texting was popular, face-to-face interactions were what defined a relationship between two people (DiDonato). Today, dating is defined as how much people text their boyfriend or girlfriend. This reduces the number of times people need to speak face to face, which deteriorates necessary social skills. Adults do not face this problem because they have already developed their communication skills before there was texting (Kluger). Human communication is a very important skill needed for life in the real world, and texting causes the decay of this skill by making the need for face-to-face communication decline. Texting is the same way. There are pros to appropriate texting and cons to the overuse and reliance on texting. It is all about how you balance the two out (Gregoire). One pro to texting is it is faster. People don’t have to take the time to call friends or family, they just shoot them a quick message whenever they are free (Baldwin). Texting also allows people to not have spontaneous wit, or humor. People have time to come up with an appropriate response (DiDonato). Texting makes it easier to keep long distance relationships steady because of the convenience of it (Baldwin). With all the pros texting offers, there are still some heavy consequences to texting. Texting can cause an emotional connection to be decreased by not having to face the person. People do not have to observe other people’s facial expressions or feelings (Gregoire). The texting apology is the biggest example of the lost emotional connection. It is too easy to text “I’m sorry” than actually have to face the person and see their emotions play out on their face (Kluger). They do not understand the small nonverbal cues people give in conversation to sometimes say “You need to stop,” without actually saying anything (Kluger). Texting can also deteriorate relationship quality (Gregoire).
