When the state government failed to assure the rights of the local citizens, then the local government is needed. The power and authority are separated among national, state and local governments in the federal system. For a county, the local government is more responsible than the state government. Since the state government were new and weak, the county governments played vital role in the administration, information, and the holistic development of their county. For example, the local control in education is the process managing the schools and colleges by appointed representative serving on school boards or committees in their local community. Mostly the national government gave grants to local governments. Local government must depend on federal money. Nowadays, it is believed that, local control misuse its authority and overpowering. 2 The Tenth Amendment of the US constitution states that “the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” State assign more responsibility over local governing bodies which are called “local- control states.” I think local control must be confined and monitored to avoid abuse and misapplication. It is very important to check and balance the power of the state and local government. According to edglossary.org, some of the major arguments for and against local control in educational are, reducing local control can lower educational costs and improve efficiency of district schools.
