Virtues find their place in the heart of any engineering discipline and provide the foundation for an engineer to mold his or her career around. From the perspective of professional development, an engineer’s reputation is of the utmost importance. By holding yourself to a certain level of moral character, others in the field will come to associate a high level of professionalism with your name and come to admire your respect for the field. In developing a sense of what virtues are applicable and necessary in your chosen field, you provide yourself with a path to success.

The undergraduate curriculum at Texas A&M has provided a strong sense of self teaching and knowing where to go to find answers and guidance. It is almost impossible for a few hour-long lectures to develop complex topics in their entirety. This means that student’s must spend time outside of the classroom further exploring topics and self-teaching. This is by no means a fault in the school system, yet a consequence of choosing to pursue a degree in a STEM field. This instills both a sense of a commitment to learning and confidence in one’s abilities to seek out and apply knowledge. In the workplace, new engineers will most likely have a mentor and a wealth of knowledge placed at their fingertips. At times, new engineers might struggle to go out and seek knowledge, letting stubbornness and self-pride get in the way of going and seeking advice from tenured staffers. With the wide array of challenges encountered in engineering settings, many times, experience in the field outweighs technical knowledge that comes with a degree. This is a prime example of where confidence in one’s ability is absolutely necessary. It is not always what you know, but knowing where or who to go to in order to accomplish the task at hand. Texas A&M has provided a sense of confidence and instilled the thought that it is not only permissible, but highly advisable to go out and seek knowledge.
