Congratulations! Gainax! Bravo! You may be wondering why I’m starting this review with so much praise, but is it praise? Maybe it’s cleverly placed sarcasm just to mask the façade of this show? Well as much as I love doing negative reviews and just making fun of how a story presents itself, Tengen toppa Gurren Lagann: Gurren-Hen, also known as Gurren Lagann is just an amazing film; only if you decide not to take it seriously. If you decide to analyze this show thoroughly from the inside-out you would be somewhat disappointed. Gurren Lagann is all just mindless fun with no hidden objectives.
“Humans are desperate creatures that hide underground and hidden away by partial safety from the world above. The barren wasteland of the surface no longer remembered by the majority of humanity, has been overtaken and ruled by savage beings called “beast-men” for longer than mankind’s existence. While there are some who fight these “beast-men” humanity has no chance against their “Gunmen” (pilotable robotic humanoids that has been weaponized for military use). This is a story of a man who has yet to realize his destiny Simon, Kamina and all of their friends have battled to the surface to obtain their long lost freedom that they once had. Upon stealing an enemy “Gunmen” from the enemy whom they vow to defeat and finding another beneath the earth surface the pair of heroes combine their strength to create an even more powerful Gunman that they call “Gurren Lagann” and fight their way to defeat the merciless ruler called the “Spiral King” and restore their freedom they once lost.”
Sounds pretty interesting right? Well that’s only half of what this show has to offer, because further arcs of the story places the characters facing even greater ...

...ult; it was really well made considering that most voice acting in other English interpreted Japanese shows down right disappoint me. I also need to give props to the music for it consists of opera and hip hop which I’m a big fan of. The music really just set the vibe for this film whether it be a slow dramatic scene or balls to the walls action scene there was always music that suit a scene well.
Overall I would recommend people watching this film not just because it’s my favorite but because it shows a fulfilling story of heroism and wit. Showing the most entertaining and interesting characters which you can feel for. While being awestricken on how well the animation flows and the music matches each scene perfectly. Without a doubt Studio Gainax has made a wonderful piece for everyone to enjoy whether if you’re into animation, storytelling or simply the music.
