1. Identical twins come from the same egg that was fertilized and have the same genes. Fraternal twins are born the same time but come from 2 separate fertilized eggs. Nature vs. Nurture basically means that either genes (Nature) or the environment (Nurture) affects the development of people. In regards to identical twins, even though they both come from the same egg and have the same genes, one may get something that the other did not. For example, one twin may get cancer which comes from the parent (genetics) while the other twin has a 0-50% chance of getting cancer. Nurture (environment) does not play a large significant role in genetics in identical twins but only how the twin experiences their own individual lives.

b) In this video the speaker says, “We can change our genes by our lifestyles.” He mentions things like eating healthier and simply loving more can help your brain and increase oxygen in blood flow. Also, he mentions how things like chocolate or alcohol can increase brain cells. If we start doing a few of these things mentioned in the video and start taking them into consideration, we can change how our genes are portrayed and seen.
c) I learned the influence that Nature vs. Nurture had on an individual was the food we have and the certain things we have that are found naturally in the environment will affect our genes. Things like tea and Cannabinoids found in Marijuana can increase brain cells while sugar and saturated fats decrease brain cells In Neurogenesis.

Temperament in monkeys
a)
b) This video talks about where our personality derives from. The video starts out with a Psychologist who studies monkeys, how they act, and how it relates to their relationships with their mother. Researchers say that monkey behavior and personalities are purely genetics and how they are at the first weeks they are born is probably how they are going to be when they are older. Overall, after the research was completed, the results proved that a parent’s actions towards their child plays a role on that child’s behavior, and the perspective the child holds on life. The older we get we can change our perspectives.
c) The influences of nature and nurture on the individual that I learned is that most personality traits are derived from our parents by genetics. Generally, because of what we experience in life, certain things can affect how we see things from different perspectives and what we say could potentially affect our personality.
d) The take-home message that we can take away from this video is that a lot of genes, traits, and habits that we have from our parents make up our personalities. With that being said, we have the ability to change the habits that we do not like about ourselves that affect our personalities but we cannot change our genes and personality. If you don’t like the habits that you have, you have the power to change them every
Could our psychological development be mainly hereditary, affected by the environment or both? Many psychologists have often questioned whether our personality traits are inherited as a result of genetics; or if they are caused by their surrounding environment through life experiences, the way we were taught, or where we grew up, and therefore learned. We share our parents ' DNA in the physical sense. I might have long legs like my mother and green eyes like my father, but where did I get my love to paint, or my natural athletic abilities.
One of the oldest controversy in psychology is nature vs. nurture. The whole debate boils down to genetic inheritance or environmental factors when it comes to human development. Philosopher Plato believed that certain behaviors are inborn or in others words occur naturally regardless of environmental factors. Then there are other philosopher such as John Locke who believe that the mind begins as a blank slate. So everything we come in contact with helps shape who we are. As for today, most expects now believe that behavior and personality are influenced by both nature and nurture. Some examples of gene inheritance are the color of your eyes, straight or curly hair, the pigment in your skin and certain inherited diseases. Not all people with blond hair are the same person and not all people in a family have the same color hair or eyes. An example of environmental factor that affects who you are is how you were brought up by your parents. Another example of environmental factor that helps influence behavior is the way you speak, you learn tone, speak, and sound from the people around you as a child. (Knowlton, 2005)
The nature vs. nurture controversy is an age old question in the scientific and psychological world with both camps having evidence to support their theories. The controversy lies in which is more influential in the development of human beings. While there is no definitive answer for this, it is interesting to look at each of them separately.
The argument of nature vs. nurture is a long-standing one in the psychological and social worlds. It is the argument about whether we are ruled by our genes or our upbringing. It is my thought that neither is true. It is nature working with nurture which determines our personality and our lifestyle.
Nature, the more scientific theory of the two, is the belief that hereditary traits found in our genes make us who we are, believable but not very convincing when we consider the theory of nurture. Human beings learn new things everyday, as soon as we come in to the world, our learning process begins. As a newborn baby, we slowly learn and adapt in order to survive in a new environment which is unlike that of our mothers wombs, our first environment in which we first grew, adapted to and developed in. The home environment parents and siblings play a huge role in determining personality. Influences from outside the family are also very important to the development of ones personality. But everything starts at home.

The research carried in animal’s shows that through manipulating DNA even if it is a single gene, it can lead to profound results. Research shows that nurture has a wide effect on brain functioning and the behavior of a person since it has the very broad sense that consists of experiences such as nutritional, social and
The debate on nurture versus nature goes much further back in history, to the times of philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato, respectively. One reason why individuals may not be aware of this is due to the different terminology used to describe
Nature and nurture affect our behavior daily and affect the way people respond to situations, such as; hardships and success. Nature has to do with the biological factors in a person, like,
If genes matter identical twins should be more similar because they have 100% of their genes in common. (Sigelman and Rider 2014) Scientist conducted a study on a set of identical twins. This study differed from other twin studies because it followed the pair that had been separated from birth to adulthood. Scientist could compare their similarities as well as their differences. The argument was that twins that are raised in the same environment may be alike due to their identical genetics or their identical environment Whereas twins who are raised apart differences between them must be attributed to differences in their environment, while similarities are mainly due to their identical heredity. (Gruber 1981) Paula Bernstein and Elyse Schein had been part of a secret research project in the 1960s and '70s that separated identical twins as infants and followed their development in a one-of-a-kind experiment to assess the influence of nature vs. nurture in child development. (Richman 2007) The birth parents and children did not know the real subject of the study. The twins were separated at birth, and were not reunited until 35 years later. “Since meeting Elyse, it is undeniable that genetics play a huge role, probably more than 50 percent," Bernstein says. “It’s not just our taste in music or books; it goes beyond
nurtures effect on personality development. Each side offers many forms of evidence and support for how personality development is created and influenced. In today's world however many people don’t accept just one of the extreme positions by themselves, simple because each side of the argument offers so many “facts”. To accept just one side of the argument would be to accept an “all or nothing take” or that you only agree with that one side. Instead, because each side makes such a valid point, many people think personality development is created through a little bit of both- nature and nurture. Outside influence and genetics collectively form how an individual's personality is developed. Personality development isn’t just black and white, it’s a combination of environmental influence and genetics. It’s a matter of how much of each influence the person we become. The question now, instead of being is personality development based on nature or nurture, is which one is more important to the development if they both contribute (McLeod, 1970). It’s simply that genetics and heredity can influence and determine personality to a certain degree, but then people will adapt and change to the surrounding environment as well. Overall nature and nurture both play their own parts in personality development as a
Anthropologist Sir Francis Galton was the one who coined the term “nature vs. nurture” and ever since than it has been a point for great discussion in the scientific community. In the simplest terms nature vs. nurture means the inherit genetic makeup of the person or the environment/personal experiences the person has influences the developmental component of that specific individual (Mossler, 2013). What are examples of each? How does each one impact a person? What does nature and nurture mean? Lets look at each question individual.
The purpose of the article was not to persuade but to elicit thought processes that surpassed the original research in their writings. While the article was focused on nature over nurture, environment was still emphasized as an important contributing factor of the personality system in different respects. There was a multitude of sources and research to back up claims and conclusion spread throughout this piece. This article was peer-reviewed and constructed by multiple professionals in the field of psychology and neuroscience. The article remains relevant even though the piece is dated in the 2000s. The theories are still sound and substantial with existing data to support their
Personality is the expression of a person’s traits according to ones feelings, mentality and behavior. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life. Different people have different personalities dependent on factors such as environment and genetic composition. Our personality is dependent on the success or failure of our development in the eight stages of life. This is proposed by Erik Erikson. Success in the development stages lead to virtues while the failure leads to malignancies.
Personality is made up of three parts Biological Influence, Psychological Influence, and Social Influence.(Exploring Psychology David Myers) A persons Biological Influence is made up of is someone’s genetically determined temperament and the autonomic nervous system and his brain activity. Psychological Influences are made up of a persons learned responses, his unconscious thought processes and his optimistic or pessimistic point of view. The Social- Cultural influences are made up of childhood experiences and a persons cultural expectation and social support. As years pass, life gets more and more complicated, especially the teenage years. Everyone’s personalities are always changing, which is natural because of the changes that they go through in life. Something that happens to them may change the way they think about that situation forever.
