In Ted Chiang's Story of Your life, the author tells the story of Dr. Banks largely focused on the communication between Dr. Banks and other characters. As Dr. Banks communicates with the rest of the characters, the author takes this time for characterization. Characterization is the concept of creating a character for a narrative. Characterization can be presented by descriptions, through their actions, speech, thoughts and interactions with other characters. Overall, characterization and communication are tied together because characterization can include how the character communicates with others. In Ted Chiang's Story of Your Life, indirect characterization was used to illustrate the broader theme of communication between Dr. Banks and the heptapods, Gary, and her daughter.
There are many examples of indirect characterization being used to illustrate communication between Dr. Banks and the heptapods. Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life” is a short science fiction story that explores the principals of linguistic relativity through in interesting relationship between aliens and humans that develops when aliens, known as Heptapods, appear on Earth. In the story Dr. Louise Banks, a linguist hired by the government to learn the Heptapods language, tells her unborn daughter what she has learned from the Heptapods as a result of learning their language. M. NourbeSe Philip’s poem “Discourse on the Logic of Language” also explores the topic of language and translations, as she refers to different languages as her “mother tongue” or “father tongue.” Although these two pieces of literature may not seem to have much in common both explore the topics of language and translation and connect those ideas to power and control.

Characters are always changing, in speech, thoughts, actions, and looks, overall changing themselves in a variety of ways. In the story, Code Talker, by Joseph Bruchac, the protagonist, Kii Yazhi(Ned Begay) changes mentally and physically through the story in many different ways from the beginning to the end. His mindset and opinions on many important things in his life change majorly as he develops himself as a person. Ned’s mentality on his heritage develops in a positive manner through the different major events that occur in his life as he goes through his own unique adventure.
Characterization is the process by which the author reveal the personality of a character. Characterization can be created in two different ways: direct and indirect characterization. Direct characterization is when the author tells the readers what a character is like. Indirect characterization is based on clues from the story, the reader decides what a character is like. Indirect characterization can come from what the character says/does, what the character thinks, what others say about the character, and the character’s physical appearance.
With the stories written these days, it is hard to tell who a complex character is because the stories in itself are so complex. A complex or dynamic character is a character in a story who changes. Some change throughout the course of the story, while other character change continuously. In order to create a complex character, an author must use contradiction. Contradiction between how the character feels and their actions. The character may appear a certain way, but may act opposite. In the novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy, the protagonist is the complex character. Although his name is not known, a reader can determine how he is so complex.
The short stories of Ted Chiang are written in a way such that the overarching structure help to give a deeper meaning to the stories. The rationale for why Chiang writes in this way is to help vary his writing style and help give the story more meaning without writing more words. Ted Chiang manipulates the structure of one of his works, “Story of Your Life,” for the purpose of augmenting the meaning the story and its underlying themes, while also using it to build a stronger relationship to the audience.
In Maggie Stiefvater’s novel, The Scorpio Races, she plays with narrative focalization using two alternating narrations from the point of view of two separate characters. The two main characters of the novel, Puck Connelly and Sean Kendrick, interact with the inhabitants of their island home, Thisby, during the same timeframe. Stiefvater provides an alternating narration so that over other chapter is narrated by the same individual. However, as the plot draws these two characters closer together, the reader is able to glimpse the characters through the eyes of the other. In having the narration from both points of view, the reader is privy to experiences and feelings that neither character is aware of in the other. These two narrators, with different speaking tones and narrative styles, enable the reader to experience what Kuzmičová terms the verbal presence, or words, of a text. This verbal presence exists as the words of the text are voiced in the mind of the reader as spoken by the narrator of the story (Kuzmičová 110). In having two separate narrators, Stiefvater has the reader encounter the verbal presence of different characters, providing the reader with more information than would be otherwise available. The protagonist of the story is Jing-mei. She is a flat character who turns out to be dynamic. Throughout her life, she has been very stubborn about accepting her identity. An example of this is when she explains, "I was 15 and had a vigorously denied that I had any Chinese whatsoever under my skin" (857). She shows her dynamic characteristic at the end of the story when she finally does accept her heritage.
The categories associated with the means of means of characterization are considered to be explicit vs. implicit characterization, auto- vs. alterocharacterization and figural and narratorial as the foci of characterization. The use of certain means of characterization depends upon the preference of the author: his style, intentions and choice of focus. The characters are characterized by 1) what they say themselves, 2) what they do, 3) what the narrator says about them and 4) what other characters say about them. One should not, however, take for granted what is said by other characters since they might not be reliable, especially if one notices certain inconsistencies. Characterization is an author’s or poet’s use of description, dialogue, dialect, and action to create an emotional or intellectual reaction, in the reader, to a character or to make a character more vivid and realistic. When characterizing Daedalus, the reader sees the brilliance in his inventions, the lack of rational decisions, and the impulse and jealousy in his life. First of all, Daedalus is a brilliant inventor, who created lots. One of Daedalus’ big downfalls as an inventor is his jealously. Daedalus gets exiled to Crete because he threw his nephew, Perdix, out of the temple, and killed him and said it was an accident. He gets exiled all because he couldn’t stand that his nephew had a few better ideas. When Daedalus and Icarus get exiled to Crete, you see Daedalus’ true inventive self. He uses his surroundings and brains to create wings to fly out of Crete because that was the only way that wasn’t guarded.
I never really thought about where my life was going. I always believed life took me where I wanted to go, I never thought that I was the one who took myself were I wanted to go. Once I entered high school I changed the way I thought. This is why I chose to go to college. I believe that college will give me the keys to unlock the doors of life. This way I can choose for myself where I go instead of someone choosing for me.
