Technology of WW2 Samantha Smith History 11 Period A 5/16/14 WW2 completely changed the world in many ways, one aspect of WW2 that really interested me is all the new technology that was made. It completely shaped and began the technological world we live in now. Due to the fact that the stakes were incredibly high during, everybody was working hard and fast to try to get ahead in the game of having the most power and advanced technology. One of the first inventions but more so of a discovery was the idea of nuclear fusion. It was discovered by a German scientist in february of 1939. This led to the invention of the atomic bomb. The atomic bomb was only used twice both times by the U.S. near the end of the war first on Hiroshima then on Nagasaki(Atomic Bomb). Though still fabric covered, the aircraft were faster and more agile than the variants used in the Great War. In 1938, the first year of the Second World War, Curtiss unveiled their P-40 Warhawk. It began in 1939 as a European conflict between Germany and an Anglo-French coalition but eventually widened to include most of the nations of the world. It ended in 1945, leaving a new world order dominated by the United States and the USSR.
World War II was one of the most important wars in history. It featured multiple countries at constant conflict with each other. There were several battles that occurred in this 12 year long war. An example of two of the battles would be the Battle of Britain in the European theater of war, and the Attack on Pearl Harbor in the Pacific theater of war. Only one of these wars saw victory, while the other caused great devastation to the American military.

The two sides during this war were the Allies and Axis powers. German, Italy and Japan were on the Axis powers; France, Britain, and the United States were on the Allies. Germany first began with the Blitzkrieg tactic meaning “lightning war”. This tactic is based on speed, surprise and was the most popular tactic. It is set up with military forces based around tanks which are supported by planes and infantry. The Blitzkrieg tactic lead to air wars with airplanes between countries. All of the countries were allowed to participate in the air wars but the four main countries were United States, Japan, Britain, and Germany. During the 1920’s and 1930’s airplanes grew in size and structure giving them more power, and making planes more effective. Planes made it easier to drop bombs, or plan attacks. All of these countries fought over air superiority. Air superiority is the position in which the air force has control over all of the air warfare and air power of the opposing forces. Germany began with air superiority but they lost it when Britain defeated them at the Battle of Britain. Advancements in technology and science contributed to one the most gory and bloodiest war in the annals of human existence. These new technological advancements revolutionized how people regarded war. War was no longer where the opposite forces fought in a coordinated battle. War evolved into game of cunning strategy where the side with the bigger, powerful, and smarter toys played better. This led to a fierce competition where each side tried to create the smarter machines and better weapons, leading to deadly mass killing weapons in the process. One weapon or machine was created and an even better one was made. New developments such as machine guns, poison gas, tanks, and new strategy to thwart trench warfare affected how WWI was fought and it came with catastrophic results.
World War II had a large effect on America, on how we were regarded in the world, on how our culture would grow and develop, and on how our citizens would develop and settle the land on their return. It brought people together for a while that were later torn apart, and changed the way Americans looked at higher education. It can be used for air traffic control, weather tracking, targeting, and navigating. Christian Hulsmeyer, invented the first ever radar in 1904 that could range 3000 meters. It was mainly used for detecting ships. British and American inventors used radio waves in 1925 to conduct measurements on earth's ionosphere. In 1935, Robert Watson Watts located an airplane using a Radio Detecting and Ranging device. As soon as 1939, many countries like Germany, Britain, USA, France, Italy, Hungary, Japan, Russia and some other countries all were equipped with some sort of radar. THere are two main types of radar, fire control and detection. Fire control radar is radar that allows pilots, (usually night fighter pilots) to locate their target, aim their sights, and fire their weapon without having to see their target. It is also used to guide a political to their destination or to guide a pilot close enough so that he can see its target and then fire upon it. The allies were the first to obtain this kind of radar and that gave them a gigantic advantage. Detection radar is radar and that basically makes a virtual map of the surrounding area. It is usually used to give a military an early heads up if another military is attaching or pursuing them.
