New Technology is a Double-edged sword With the development of science and technology, the new technology broadens people’s vision and has greatly facilitated people's lives. It is commonly believed that the advanced science and technology add much flavor to people's daily life. More and more people deem that social media play an increasingly important role, which cannot be ignored, in people’s social life and work in the 21st century. Because of that, many people would like to keep abreast with the latest development of the new technology. However, from another perspective, we cannot ignore the negative effects new medias bring to some extent. Sherry Turkle, the professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, hold different attitudes towards this issue. In her newest book Alone Together, Turkle explores how communication technology is changing who we are. This phenomenon social media technology brings to people exists for a number of reasons. She argues convincingly about the personal destruction resulting from our growing dependence on it. “The ability to carefully control how we portray ourselves may actually be making us less willing to communicate in the real world.”(Moody, Mia) With less alone time, we have less time to think about who we really are. Social networks allow us to project the image of who we want to become. The ideal image we create for ourselves is more or less different from whom we really are, and obviously this image is what we wish to show to the public. The difference makes us become a better character person than who we are. Being acting the ideal person for a long time on social networks makes us indulge in the fake personality, and confuses us ... ... middle of paper ... ... report on what the epidemic of loneliness is doing to our souls and our society.”(Marche, Stephen) Taking all these factors into consideration, we naturally come to the conclusion that technology is a double edge sword. With no doubt, we cannot live without the advanced science and technology, but it’s undeniable that technology also has its drawbacks as well as merits at the same time. We must try to find out new ways to cope with the problems that would arise at the same time. Immediate measures should be taken to stop the situation urgently. In “Connectivity and its Discontents,” Sherry Turkle discusses how often we are found on our technology. Turkle states in her thesis “Technology makes it easy to communicate when we wish and to disengage at will.” In the essay are interviews on several different people, of all ages to get their view on the 21st century. Teens are starting to rely on “robot friendships,” the most communication teens get are from their phones. Are we so busy trying to connect to the media that we are often forgetting what is happening around us?
Are technology and the media shedding the very fabric of the existence we have known? As technology and the media spread their influence, the debate over the inherent advantages and disadvantages intensifies. Although opinions vary widely on the subject, two writers offer similar views: Professor Sherry Turkle, director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, in her article “Can You Hear Me Now” and Naomi Rockler-Gladen, who formerly taught media studies at Colorado State University, with her article “Me Against the Media: From the Trenches of a Media Lit Class.” Turkle asserts that technology has changed how people develop and view themselves, while at the same time affecting their concepts of time management and focus (270). Similarly, Rockler-Gladen believes media and its inherent advertising have had a profound effect on the values and thinking of the public (284). I could not agree more with Professor Turkle and Ms. Rockler-Gladen; the effects technology and media have worried and annoyed me for quite so time. The benefits of technology and media are undeniable, but so then are the flaws. People are beginning to shift their focus away from the physical world to the virtual world as they find it easier and more comfortable. The intended purpose of technology and media was to be a tool to improve the quality of life, not shackles to tie people to their devices. I no longer recognize this changed world and long for the simple world of my youth.

Sherry Turkle’s article in The New York Times “The Flight From Conversation”, she disputes that we need to put down the technology and rehabilitate our ability to converse with other human beings because we are replacing deep relationships with actual people for casual encounters on technology. Turkle tries to convince young and middle age individuals who are so enthralled by the technology that they are losing the ability to communicate in a public setting. Sherry Turkle unsuccessfully persuades her audience to put down the technology and engage with others in public through her strong logos appeal that overpowers her weak logos and doesn’t reliably represent herself and her research.
