A team leader has a variety of traits and characteristics that encourages the team members to follow him or her. Team leaders naturally possess certain qualities and skills such as consideration and integrity which encourages trust and respect among the team members. Natural team leaders hence people that are born to be leaders, possesses exceptional organizational skills such as planning the objectives and strategies to perform accordingly to allow team members to perform accordingly to the leader’s plan to avoid any problem. Team leaders have the ability to maintain order and guide the team members towards achieving the company goals and objectives.

Which means having the verbal skills to provide a clear picture of what the organization expects from the team? Quality verbal and written communication skills allow leaders to present their expectations to team members in a way workers can understand. Being a leader is having the skills and techniques to provide the most understandable explanations in order to guide the team member have to do their work. (Smallbusiness.chron.com, 2016) Hence for example if the team leader did not provide a clear explanation of what is required of the team members , then there might be occurring conflicts and problems to face. Working as a team involves different people with different viewpoints which sometimes could escalate to creating conflict. A team leader when faced with these situations should firstly acknowledge the conflict, discuss the impact of the conflict, come up with a solution to the conflict and lastly coming to an agreement on the solution. They enjoy taking up a challenge and embracing change as they know it will benefit them in the long term while followers have to be forced to drive out a project by their boss. They rarely, if ever, volunteer to take on a project by themselves. Leaders are hands-on, and are not content with simply waiting for the next step to be done. They despise indecisiveness and are driven crazy if the progress is far behind. They accept and take responsibility over the team’s mistakes and are motivated to conquer the team’s obstacles while they are at it however team members are re-active, content with inactivity, as long as nobody is on their backs about it. Obstacles throw them off course and they look to leaders to re-build their confidence and set them back on the right track. (Careerwise.ie, 2013)

Lastly, leaders drive projects and people to the finish line. They are like freight trains, unstoppable forces that will breakthrough any obstacle that gets in their way. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they plough through people that get in their way. A good leader will push teamwork rather than individual achievements. They compliment members of the group under their care in order to motivate team members and get them to buy into their plan.
