Although multifarious people may believe, that the Tasmanian devil is a vicious animal, they are not as vicious as they seem. These devils will feed off of other dead animals, and won’t go hunt for their food. Tasmanians are an endangered species. They are a carnivorous marsupial. Even though they look adorable, they are extremely fierce. The species scientific name is Sarcophilus Harrisii . (“Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus harrisii”). First and foremost, they live in the wild part of Tasmania, in Australia. Tasmanian devils during the day scour the land to find shelter, anywhere they can. Primarily, in caves, or bushes, hollow logs, and sometimes old wombat burrows. They lived on the mainland here of Australia, although their fossils suggest that they died out of the mainland in the 1600’s, before the Egyptians had settled. These animals are mainly black, but some have a minuscule amount of white markings, usually around the tail, and on the chest. Their oversized neck, jaws, and head, is what help them hunt. During the night, sometimes people can hear an eerie growl. What happens when a group of devils feed together at only one carcass? People can hear harsh screeching, and spine chilling screams. The babies run around and climb, using their large footpads, on their back legs. They can use their back legs as friction too, this way, it stops them from sliding while they are climbing. Devils are dying, from a disease, that only they can get. This disease is called, devil facial tumor disease. It can spread just by a single bite. The tar pits were surrounded by grasslands, shrubby areas and pine forests. Sabertooth cats fed off of herbivores so they often times lived in areas like this because many of the plant-eating animals sabertooth cats relied on lived in these areas. Smilodons also preferred to live in closed habitats so that it was easy to ambush it’s prey while hiding in bushes. Fossils show some evidence that Sabertooths were social, perhaps even living in groups to care for one another. Fossil records also suggest that they lived in icy lands, as they lived during the end of the Dinosaurs and during the Ice Age.

Unlike the maned wolf and coyote, Darwin’s fox lives in the temperate forests, especially near Chile, or any other place in South America. Some species live on Nahuelbuta National Park or in Chiloe Island. Alike the coyote and maned wolf, Darwin’s fox is omnivorous and a secondary consumer. It eats mammals, invertebrates, reptiles and birds as well as fruits. Because of it’s small size, Darwin’s fox is easier to get caught by predators such as wild and domesticated dogs as well as pumas.
The invasive reptiles are eating almost everything in sight like raccoons, opossums, bobcats, alligators and many federally protected animals like the Key Largo wood rat and Wood stork. There have been cases of children and pets being eaten or even squeezed to death by the large snakes in their own yards.
I was able to listen to two versions of the story surrounding the Jersey Devil while conducting research for this assignment. The first story teller is an 18 year old female from Rockaway, New Jersey. This town is a suburban community in northern New Jersey with the majority of residents belonging to the economic middle class. I collected this story during a trip to see my parents on April 1, 2006 at the story teller’s home. She told me the story shortly after dinner so it was nearly dark when she told me the story. The second story teller is a 15 year old female that is also from Rockaway, New Jersey. This story teller also told me the story of the Jersey Devil on April 1, 2006, and also delivered the story from her home during dinner.

In the 19th century Stephen Decator was testing cannonballs, when he saw a creature flying he tried shooting it down but it continued its path. The King Cobra is widely known for the hood that it has to warn off creatures when it feels threatened or in danger. If the animal/thing does not heed the warning, it gets a venomous bite from it. The venom in the fangs blocks nerve signals from the brain, paralyzing the creature, then dies if not treated immediately. The King Cobra also has a secret weapon: camouflage. It may not be that secret, but the Cobra easily blends into the surrounding floor. Any unaware prey that happens to walk by, might soon die.

According to McCallum (2008), Tasmanian devil facial tumor disease is an aggressive transmissible parasitic cancer that is threatening the lives of the largest surviving marsupial carnivore with extinction. The disease was first discovered in at photograph of a devil with an unusual facial tumor at Mt. William in 1996, on the far northeastern corner of Tasmania. Even though it was common for Tasmanian devils to have tumors now and then, this struck some interest to the marsupial family. Before the disease was discovered, Tasmanian devils were known for being the largest extant marsupial carnivore species. Now that the disease is spreading rapidly throughout the species population, there is a decline in population of more than 60%. This species is now listed as an endangered animal by Australian state of Tasmania in May of 2008.

When she found out she was pregnant with her thirteenth child, she cursed it and said it better be a devil. When it was born, the midwife died of shock and the Devil ate its twelve sibilants, sparing its mother and flew out the chimney (Juliano 1). Another version of the story is that Mrs. Leeds cursed the child after giving birth to it, she then locked it in the attic for years. It then transformed into the beast it is today and escaped into the woods (Russell 1). The Jersey Devil is only a myth to some and a horrific reality to others. Thousands of people have seen the Devil and been harassed by it throughout the years. There are many similarities in these sightings. Many of the witnesses say it has a long neck, a tail, wings, and hooves. There has also been vicious attacks on animals. Several accounts have reported mutilated pets and livestock. The legend of the Jersey Devil may be true because of the sightings, descriptions, and attacks.
