HSC Assessment Task 4-Physics and Technology Research Assignment 2016 -Assess, by analysing the information and using available evidence, the impact of the invention of transistors on society with particular reference to their use in microchips and microprocessors. The invention of transistors which is used in microchips and microprocessors was a major milestone in science and has made a huge impact on society. Most of the impacts made have been positive but some negative impacts do exist. Transistors are made out of semiconducting material. Solid state devices are made out of transistors which plays an important role in our everyday lives, whether in our smartphones or computers. Before transistors were invented, many electrical appliances Society quickly switched to them as they were more energy efficient, fast, accurate and compact compared to thermionic devices. Also, unlike thermionic devices, no warmup time was required as they operated instantaneously. Positive impact on society Negative impact on society -use of microprocessors have led to appliances such as phones, computers ,TV, washing machines and other home appliances which has improved communication, lifestyle conveniences and provides society with entertainment. -Has led to heavy use of technology which prevents face to face conversation. As a result, it has a negative social atmosphere for society. -Use of microchips has allowed invention of mechanical devices to improve productivity and to do tasks that humans cannot do. Eg. Robotic arms and industrial machinery. -Causing a decrease in employment as jobs are being taken over by machines. -Microchips have improved methods of communication which include the internet and phones. This connects people from around the world like never before. Eg. Email and social media sites. -Cybercrimes such as fraud and larceny are created as a result of the internet. As well as making it more difficult to protect privacy and copyright. -Appliances become smaller and smaller, many of those are Almost all medical procedures require the applications of physics. The main medical applications of physics include ultrasound, electromagnetic radiations, radioisotopes and magnetic fields. These applications have allowed diagnosis and close monitoring of the body with minimal invasive procedures as well as an being accurate allowing early detection of diseases such as cancer. Thus prolonging our lives. One of the applications used is ultrasound. Ultrasound scans have been used in obstetrics and has completely changed the way the health of pregnant women is managed. As ultrasounds do not use ionising radiation it is a safe method of scanning both mother and foetus for abnormalities. As a result, it is now easier to detect normal pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy and to assess the foetus for any irregularities. This has led to a higher chance of getting a positive outcome for both the mother and the unborn child. Also, ultrasound is used to diagnose problems in the heart and measuring blood flow through the heart and blood vessels. Which is harmless to the patient as well as being
Diagnostic medical sonography is a profession where sonographers direct high-frequency sound waves into a patient’s body through the use of specific equipment to diagnose or monitor a patient’s medical condition. As described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this examination is referred to as an ultrasound, sonogram, or echocardiogram. The high-frequency sound waves emitted from the handheld device, called a transducer, bounce back creating an echo and therefore produce an image that can be viewed on the sonographers computer screen. This image provides the sonographer and physician with an internal image of the patient’s body that will be used in the diagnosis. The most familiar use of ultrasound is used in monitoring pregnancies and is provided by obstetric and gynecologic sonographers, who also provide imaging of the female reproductive system. Other types of sonography include; abdominal sonography, breast sonography, musculoskeletal sonography, neurosonography and cardiovascular sonography. Due to the vast nature of uses in sonography, most professionals study one field that they choose to specialize in. Diagnostic medical sonography is a rapidly growing field because of the increase in medical advances. The area of Cleveland, Ohio has continued to rise in the medical field with great strides, providing better career prospects with the availability of numerous employment positions.
Technology has changed the way the world generally communicates negatively by not allowing true interaction with each other, technology is changing the way we used to read physical books by preventing them to make the brain work better, and people can easily get their hands on technology and use it to do wrong towards others.
This makes kids forget how to socialize with one another and not know how to carry on a conversation. Along with socialization becoming obsolete, technology causes addiction, and the replacement of jobs throughout America. The reasons why technology is impacting society in a negative way is how people are forgetting how to socialize and becoming antisocial, automatics are taking the place of jobs for humans, and the internet is making millions addicted along with more mental health problems.
Without the use of physics in the medical field today, diagnosis of problems would be challenging, to say the least. The world of medical imaging in particular has benefited greatly from the use of physics.
Ultrasound Technicians are very valuable in the world of health care. Also known as Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, an Ultrasound Technician uses special machines and equipment that operates on sound waves to determine or diagnose medical problems for patients. There are specializations within this field in which some individuals explore. For instance, areas of specialization includes but not limited to; pregnancy, heart health, gynecology, and abdominal sonography. Although each specializing branch has its own distinctive function, they all involve probing the body to facilitate doctors with diagnoses.
The invention of the microchip ushered in the information age and the cyber revolution in the same way that the invention of the steam engine ushered in the industrial revolution and the invention of the plow ushered in the agricultural revolution. Just as the growth of the industrial revolution was accompanied by the expansion of colonialism, so has the information age been accompanied by the growth of the global economy. This has impacted class relations in several profound
A microprocessor an integrated circuit that contains all the functions of a central processing unit of a computer. The video game era blooms. This is how arcades became more popular because video games were hard to make at first. The very first console came out which allowed people to sit at home on their sofa. The first digital watch came out, or the liquid crystal display.
In 1906, L.D Forest invented the first vacuum tube which was used for rectifying, amplifying and switching electrical signals [1]. Vacuum tubes had played an important role in the development of electronics before the advent of semiconductor transistor. In 1947, J. Brattain and W. Bardeen invented the first point contact junction transistor [2,3] and in 1948 W. Schokley proposed bipolar junction transistor (BJT) [4]. In 1951, W. Shockley invented junction field-effect transistor (JFET) [5]. JFET replaced the vacuum tube by a solid state device and found the path for smaller and cheaper electronic devices. In 1958, j. Kilby invented the first integrated circuit and received the Nobel physics prize for his innovative work [6].For the first time, In 1960, D. Kahng fabricated metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) on silicon(Si)-substrate using silicon oxide(SiO2)[7].MOSFETs rapidly replaced the JFET and had become core of microelectronics. Due to single polarity of MOSFET, it suffered large power dissipation. In 1963, the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) field effect transistor (FET) which uses both n-type and p-type MOSFETs [8].
The two aspects of physics which I investigated were: * Gamma Camera * Ultrasound Applications of physics. * Gamma camera The first application of physics that I witnessed was the Gamma camera in the nuclear medicine department. This basically involves the patient being injected with a gamma emitting-isotope, this radioactive substance then sends back images of the internals of the patient. The half-life of the isotope is to suit the time of the diagnostic tests and the convenience of the patient so there isn't a lot of radiation they are exposed to. Below is an example of a gamma camera.
Another example of the change in our technology over the last century is the change in the computer. In 1946, the first electronic computer called the ENIAC took up the space of a large room. Instead of using transistors and IC chips, the ENIAC used vacuum tubes. Compared to many computers now, the ENIAC is about as powerful as a small calculator. That may not be much, but it is a milestone because there would not be computers today if it were not for the ENIAC. As the years passed, the computer became smaller and more powerful. Today, more than half of the American population has a computer in their home. The personal computers today are thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful computers fifty years ago.
Over the last few decades, technology has greatly increased its abilities. It started from the simple radio to now having cell phones which can surf the web. Technology has greatly influenced our society in many ways. Nowadays it has made family relationships have a different connection and has simplified people’s lives. A couple decades ago, a person would never had imagined to Skype a family member across the world. It would be like trying to imagine teleportation. It was unthinkable, but with moderation, technology has evolved for the better. With the new technology in our world, people are able to talk to their distant family members. People are also able to save time and watch a movie with their extra time. There are pros and cons to having technology nowadays. Yes, people are able to communicate faster and save money, but technology is also disconnecting them from the people around them. Technology has changed humanity for the better, but humans must know to use technology in moderation.
Technology Then to Now Throughout time, machines, no matter how simple or complex, have played a vital role in the development of civilization into the future. In other words, machines have played a part in helping our culture develop into what it has become today. This dates back to the beginning of time when an early man used a stick and a fulcrum (rock) to make a simple lever. Technology:
Technology has impacted our society in a positive way it has also brought on many challenges which lead to loss of human interaction. Technology has allowed many people to do everything they need with just the touch of a button. This takes the pressure off of people to remember important numbers and dates. It has given humans the availability and opportunity to connect with friends and family all over the world, which makes it easier to maintain long-lasting relationships and stay connected no matter the
Almost every device has some type of computer in it. Whether it is a cell phone, a calculator, or a vending machine. Even things that we take for granted most cars since the 1980’s have a computer in it or a pacemaker. All of the advancements in computers and technology have led up to the 21st century in which “the greatest advances in computer technology will occur…” Mainly in areas such as “hardware, software, communications and networks, mobile and wireless connectivity, and robotics.”
However, due to all these facilities people no longer need to meet in person as much, and interpersonal relationships are suffering worldwide because people are communicating through a small handheld device. Lots of people have Smartphones and they use them almost semi-continuously, including in public settings when they could be making new friends, finding new lovers, and talking/interacting with their current friends. When technology solves one of our problems, we keep immediately coming up with new, larger problems, no technology will ever be able to satisfy our constantly new needs. However, if we allow technology to make our life easier, and focus more on the quality, rather than the quantity of life, and also learn how to use technology to our greatest advantage, such as how to use it to influence others, we can all greatly benefit. For example, the invention of the car allowed us to save time, when compared to walking.
