Tartuffe Play Analysis

For Tartuffe the play was performed at the Strub Theatre at Loyola Marymount University. Jean Baptiste Poquelin de Moliere wrote the original play in 1664. The play consisted of five acts and each line of the play is twelve syllables long and was arranged in rhyming couplets. I thought that this made it hard for me to understand at first but I eventually got use to it as the play progress forward. The fact that Moliere wrote the play in French verse and playwrights have translated it over to different languages over the centuries is fascinating. The term for Moliere’s writing style is called alexandrine and one thing I found interesting was how all of Shakespeare’s plays were written in unrhymed pentameter compared to Tartuffe. When I first initially sat down in my seat, all the characters of the play were sitting in front of the table before the play started and acting very casual. I was confused to what was happening and if the play started when I first initially sat down. The mother of the house rants at her children to begin Act 1 and as the play progresses the father, Orgon allows his daughter to marry the antagonist Tartuffe. It was fascinating to know that the actors were Loyola Marymount University students doing their final dress rehearsal. After taking this class throughout the semester, I realize how hard it might be to memorize script and be ready to perform in front of hundreds of people and I thought that they did an excellent job in their final dress rehearsal and I’m pretty sure they did just fine in their real performance. My favorite character in the play was Tartuffe because I felt that the actor embodied the characteristics of Tartuffe so well. He made the audience laugh while at the same time hate the character of Tartuffe. Overall, the transitions and lighting were really well done made the play flow really
