Employees who are perpetually tardy for work cause problems for the whole organization. Not only does tardiness cause a drop in moral for other employees, it causes a reduction in profit. Tardy employees can cost millions of dollars for an organization. Influencing behaviors of employees can reduce employee’s lateness. Every leader needs to show employees that punctuality is important. First, it is important to have a written policy about tardiness and display it in the employee handbook. When a new person is hired, be sure to go over the policy and emphasize how important punctuality is at the company. Accountability is everyone’s business and something that is taken serious. When employees are late, other employees do notice. Frequent absenteeism and tardiness causes tension among co-workers. Employees who show up on time feel they have an increased workload because they are at work longer. This is also unfair to workers who show up to work on time. Allow other employees to acknowledge their lateness. Employee’s tardiness causes low morale. This will also make other workers feel there is favoritism among staff. When employees are upset with others, it will result in a loss of productivity. Teamwork will be threatened and friendships broken. Being late to work does not only affect the employee itself, it upsets the whole organization. Offer them to call or email to advise they will be late. By doing this, it will hold them accountable and have to admit to their actions. Next, discuss the undiscussable behavior with each offender. As uncomfortable as it may seem, do not avoid discussing the bad behavior. By not doing anything, employees will think the tardiness is going unnoticed and will continue to carry on the behavior. They need to know their lateness is being noticed. By taking the time to ask why they are late, it is showing them someone cares. Also give them a chance to explain, they may have a good reason. It is important to change the behavior and finding the root of the problem before offering rewards. Giving rewards to employees who are already arriving to work on time will cause them to regress when rewards are eliminated. Make sure the rewards are given in a timely manner and are tied to the vital behavior. Rewards and incentives can be monetary or simply acknowledged. Employers could give an extra hourly wage if employees arrive at their scheduled work time. Gift cards or prizes are also good incentives. Leaders may want to have breakfast or lunches for employees who have managed to change their behavior. Even just acknowledging that they have changed their vital behavior is worth any amount of money. In the end, if the vital behavior cannot be changed, punishment will be required. Be prepared for what the punishment will be. Choices of reprimand are loss in pay, written or verbal warnings and to make up missed time. Separation from the company will be the last step (p. 242).
