In the play The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, the theme of the contrasts between illusion and reality occurs frequently. This contrast undoubtedly creates major conflicts, as seen in The Taming of the Shrew. This theme appears with the character Bianca and her true character which is hidden until after her wedding. In addition, this theme occurs with the character Katherine, who, just like her sister, does not reveal her true character until after her wedding. Finally, the theme of reality versus illusion appears with the character Patrick, who appears to be evil after his marriage to Katherine, but the real reason for his behavior is actually quite kind. Bianca appears to be a very, very sweet person. She is daddy’s little girl and in his eyes, she can never do anything wrong. However, this is just an illusion. In reality, Bianca is actually quite stuck up and rude. This true personality comes out only after she marries Luke. The contrast between what people see in Bianca and her actual personality leads to conflicts, especially with her new husband. At her wedding, Bianca won’t listen to her husband, having Ben pass on the message that “She is busy and cannot come” (Shrew Act 5 Scene 2 Line 87). By doing this, Bianca loses her husband a hundred crowns, as he had bet that much that she would come, but she didn’t, so he lost the bet. Losing this bet annoys Luke, and it foreshadows the continued issues he will have with Bianca’s true personality throughout their marriage. Luke would not have lost the bet or have had other issues with her throughout their marriage if Bianca had showed her true personality, which she hid with the illusion of her being a sweet angel, before their marriage. Luke would have probably not even married her if he knew she was actually
