Midnight Musings: A Commuter's Tale in Olympia

At midnight all the streets were quite in the city of Olympia in Washington. The sky was clear

and the stars were shining bright. A full moon made the roads easier to see. Usually John Robinson

could only see what the headlights of his 1965 mustang were pointing at, however on this night the

moon let his eyes see much more of his surroundings. John Robinson drove down the same roads

five times a week on his way home from work. The back roads appealed to him, he did not want to

always drive in the city. There were too many other vehicles and traffic lights every one hundred feet

he would have to stop at a red light or to let a pedestrian cross the road. Commutes to work were full

Brown wavy hair went to his

chin, and his eyes were green. He stood at 5'9 which was about average height for a twenty three year

old man. Most of his friends knew that he was a creature of habit when it can to clothing almost

everyday he wore the same gray Adidas, blue jeans that were a bit loose and a gray button up jacket

that had fluffy white and black cuffs that covered his wrists.

John Robinson enjoyed most things in life he thought that it was great to be alive he wanted to

experience new adventures and visit far away lands. He worked as a security guard in a bank he would

walk through the halls and check doors to see who was behind them. John did not enjoy his job very

much however he knew that it would give him the money he needed to be able to go off on his

adventures around the world. John passed many fields were small houses or barns were connected to

the road by long dirt roads. Every few nights he would have to dodge a deer that deiced to run over the

street. That was the most excitement he got in his day. In five years he had never hit a deer, and in

A

burning beam had fallen and crushed the old mans legs. John yelled at the man, “Sir I'm going break

the beam this may hurt.” Since the beam was on fire John knew that it had been weakened. He turned

over on his back and anchored his feet up against the beam. With all of his strength John dug his heels

into the beam. With a large snap and crash the beam broke. John pick up the man, and put him over his

shoulder. They tumbled down the stairs when they reached the bottom John grabbed his ankle, he knew

that it was broken. The heat was unbearable and John pulled himself together grabbed the man and ran

out into the field.

John hopped into safety collapsing on the ground near his mustang. In the distance he could

see red lights flashing and could hear a large truck approaching. Two men ran to John and the old man

while many more rushed passed them with large hoses. The ambulance arrived they took the old man

to the hospital then started treating John's ankle. As John sat in the car a firefighter walked up to him

and said, “You did a great job, that took real guts.” John smiled and nodded his head. As
