Our world today has set many expectations and trends and it is set to the point where if you do not have or do certain things you will not fit in. A big trend that has been set in our generation and society today is depression along with other mental illnesses. Depression is a serious case of loneliness and sadness that affects many people around us and throughout the world however, our society has belittled this illness and has turned it something it should have never become in the first place. To begin with, depression is known as a mental health disorder characterized by persistently depressed (sad) mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairments in daily life. Another common question that is asked is if this people have this mental illness without even knowing and yes it does. A lot of times when people try and seek help they are seen as looking for attention and they get compared to others who claimed to have that illness as well or they might be afraid of what others may think or say and in result of that they rather stay quiet and keep their thoughts to themselves. Depression can be a scary word in today’s society, not many people know how to react or respond to someone who is depressed. With a lot of support available within communities, depression still remains complicated for people to understand. As a result of this, people try various ways and approaches and are not successful.
Treating depressive and bipolar disorders with antidepressants remains a popular option in clinical practice. Most clinicians choose the drug or class of drugs, usually selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI's, that is most effective and best tolerated with fewer severe side effects. These drugs are beneficial because they specifically target serotonin-based areas of the brain without affecting other neurotransmitter systems. SSRI's largely replaced tricyclic antidepressants which work by blocking the absorption (reuptake) of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, thereby increasing the levels of these two neurotransmitters in the brain. Tricyclic antidepressants present severe side effects and thus are usually only used when other treatments have failed. If SSRI's or tricyclics are not effective Monoamine oxidase inhibitors may be prescribed. MAOI's, enhance tyramine to increase norepinephrine and serotonin. While taking MAOI's you must abstain from foods and alcohol that contain tyramine such as, yogurt, aged cheese, and substances such as cold medications. Today depression is more common in younger populations mainly college students. There are many things that can trigger depression in college students, such as the environment, anxiety, and the fear of failure.
