Grateful Dead The Grateful Dead was a famous rock and roll band. During the 1960’s, the band had an audience called the “deadheads”. Deadheads were a bunch of druggies. Jerry Garcia was a big part in this band before his fatal health issues came along. The Grateful Dead was a band that impacted society by breaking rules to build their career. The Grateful Dead was a famous rock and roll band throughout the 1960’s. They had a lot of ups and downs during their time as a band together. Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann were all in the band together. The Grateful Dead played a variety of music but mainly they were a rock and roll band; blues, reggae, country, folk, and space rock. The Grateful Dead did their first show at Magoo's pizza on May 5th, 1965. During this time they were known as the Warlocks. They realized after a while that there was another band named Warlocks. After they changed their name from the Warlocks to the Grateful dead, they played in San Jose, California. The place was called Ken Kesey's Acid Tests. The first show ever recorded was by a fan at Fillmore Auditorium on January 8, 1966. The name Grateful Dead means “ the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial.” All of the band members agreed on it after Jerry Garcia brought it up to everyone after reading a dictionary. The term “Grateful Dead” shows up in folktales in a variety of cultures. Owsley Stanley became the bands financial backer. Owsley bought them a house and sound equipment to practice with. There have been many bigshot artists that have gone down in music history over the years. One man in particular, however, will forever be known all over the world for his famous works and amazing stage performances. This man is none other than the one and only Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix altered the style of rock and roll during the late 60’s early 70’s and is widely considered one of the most influential guitar players amongst the music world to this day.
The Grateful Dead are one of the rock bands that helped shape music into what it is now. The band is known for their signature live performances, which includes improvisational sections that can last for up to half an hour. The Grateful Dead has had many different members who all influenced their unique sound in a different way. The history of the Grateful Dead begins in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. There, Jerry Garcia befriended a man named Robert Hunter.

The band consist of 8 members, Nathan East bassist/vocals, Andy Fairweather-Low, lead guitar/vocals, Steve Ferrone- drums, Chuck Leavell-key boardist, Ray Cooper- tambourines, Katie Kissoon and Tessa Niles- vocals, and Eric Clapton- composer, rock n roll guitarist, lead vocalist. The band members dressed in casual attire. The band members were professionals, they knew exactly how to orchestrate every chord, they collaborated with the lead singer and each other in ways that wasn’t so noticeable to the audience but they knew which chords to use for every song, the band was a top notch team. The tempo of the songs were a mixture of fast, slow, to a medium style beat. The texture of the songs was homophonic and well put together lyrics. The style of the music was from the 1960s-1970s which genres were rock, blues rock, psychedelic rock, hard rock, jazz and blues.
The subject of this writing, is on a man who changed music; a man on the level of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. This individual is Kurt Donald Cobain from the revolutionary grunge/rock band, Nirvana. He supported finding happiness through drugs and through life and he severely influenced the public and many people followed in his steps and this began the hippie movement. Not only did he have an impact on society, but he also had an impact in the individual American’s life, giving a sense of hope and freedom to the world. On September 18, 1970, Jimi died in London from drug related complications and while he was only 27 years old at the time of his passing, he left his legendary mark on the world of rock music and remains popular to this day.

Jerry Garcia’s life was filled with wonderful things, many of which he never expected in the first place. After an almost fatal heroin overdose in 1986, “ Garcia philosophically stated, ‘ I’m 45 years old, I’m ready for anything, I didn’t even plan on living this long so all this shit is just add-on stuff.’ ” (“Garcia”) This attitude shows why Garcia did all of the things he did and even how some of them came about. Garcia, who “functioned as the preeminent pied piper of the rock era,” led a life of great artistic ability which he used in many ways(“Grateful Dead_ Rockhall”).
In closing, the undoubtable influence of music, more specifically of Rock ‘n’ Roll on American society is responsible for a number of changes to the status quo. These range from sexual liberation and racial desegregation all culminating with other influences to create an intergenerational identity. Despite the desperate attempts of older generations to smother these influences, these changes ultimately shaped the years that followed, molding the country into what it is today. Along the way these changes as well as individual involvement in them has also eased the lives of many through empowerment and a feeling of community and purpose. Despite a lull and renewal Rock ‘n’ Roll continues to serve as an agent of influence and change in today’s youth culture and continues to burn in the heart of past generations of loyal fans.
