In the movie, The Book of Life, there is an ability to compare the concepts and the plot of the movie to the ideas that Northrop Frye discusses in his lectures called The Educated Imagination. This would be through comparing Fryes levels of the mind to the three main characters in the movie which are Manolo, Maria, and Joaquin. Other key concepts are relating conventions found in The Book of Life to previous literature and films, creating meaning of images and symbols seen in the movie and how they can be associated to our daily lives, and making a comparison between the main characters horizontal and vertical perspectives and their relation to the human perspectives that have previously been created as well. The land of the remembered demonstrates the symbolism of heaven in reality, and how heaven is a place people are tempted to live in after death because of its peacefulness and happiness. But the land of the forgotten is symbolic of how hell would be if it were to exist in reality. In The Educated Imagination, Frye discusses how there is always a further meaning of symbols or images that can be demonstrated in literature, and in this film these two lands have a further meaning of how we would like to choose our eternity after living on earth. These symbols impact the plot of the movie because the destiny of the main characters after life is based on their actions and attitudes of life before death, whether they choose to live peacefully, or to live full of anger and resentment against those who have hurt the characters or change their perspectives on life. When relating the Horizontal and Vertical perspectives of reality to The Book of Life, these perspectives play a big role on whether the characters in the film progress to make their lives more enjoyable by being themselves without judgement, and whether in reality there is a creative goal to be achieved such as having a successful job that can provide financial stability and happiness throughout peoples lives. It is important to relate literature to one another so we can create the mind set of characters, add uniqueness to the entire film to make it unconventional to other literature, and create a further meaning of life based on imagery and symbolism that can be created to give a further understanding to literature, but also reality as well and the paths taken to find the correct identity to create happiness and
