Though Poe's cause of death is still unknown, his work The Masque of The Red Death shows a very apparent idea of death's inevitability. This is noticeable from the minute it is described, till it is used for the stories denouement. Poe used many symbols in his works to bear different ideas. The depiction of symbolism in the seventh chamber of the work, ¨The Masque of The Red Death¨, by Edgar A. Poe is used to convey fear and highlight the theme of death's inevitability.

The, ¨deep blood color,” resembles that of fire and danger; it is even known to raise blood pressure, and is closely related to war (Poe). The symbolism of the red color about the room, ¨is reminiscent of blood,¨ and the dull black, ¨is traditionally associated with the funeral,¨ (Dudley). The color scheme increases the dreary gloom of death inside the chamber, and gives it a decaying tone. The last parts of this story ends with everyone dying in the seventh chamber. This is an ironic twist considering that the seventh chamber was part of an elaborate scheme to avoid death, yet the chamber itself represented death, and everyone died in it. The Red Death thought to be, ¨wholly outside,¨ is seen to be, ¨balanced between outside and inside,¨ (Roth). The abbey did not fulfill its purpose of protecting against the Red Death, because the chamber made it clear that death was always with them. Through many contextual clues, diction, and imagery the seventh chamber implies death was always in the abbey.
